Search for New Physics via Low-Energy Electron Recoils with a 4.2 Tonne-Year Exposure from the LZ Experiment

We report results from searches for new physics models through electron recoils using data collected by the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment during its first two science runs, with a total exposure of 4.2 tonne−years. The observed data are consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Constraints are derived for electromagnetic interactions of solar neutrinos, solar axionlike particles (ALPs), mirror dark matter, and the absorption of bosonic dark matter candidates. The inverse Primakoff process for 57 Fe deexcitation solar ALPs is considered for the first time. These results represent the most stringent constraints to date on keV-scale Primakoff and 57 Fe solar ALPs, bosonic dark matter, mirror dark matter, and neutrino millicharge, while remaining competitive for the other signal models investigated.

Imprints of High-Density Nuclear Symmetry Energy on Crustal Fraction of Neutron Star Moment of Inertia

The density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy E sym (ρ) remains the most uncertain aspect of the equation of state (EOS) of supradense neutron-rich nucleonic matter. Utilizing an isospin-dependent parameterization of the nuclear EOS, we investigate the implications of the observational crustal fraction of the neutron star (NS) moment of inertia ΔI/I for the E sym (ρ). We find that symmetry energy parameters significantly influence the ΔI/I, while the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter has a negligible effect. In particular, an increase in the slope L and skewness J sym of symmetry energy results in a larger ΔI/I, whereas an increase in the curvature K sym leads to a reduction in ΔI/I. Moreover, the ΔI/I is shown to have the potential for setting a lower limit of symmetry energy at densities exceeding 3 ρ 0 , particularly when L is constrained to values less than 60 MeV, thereby enhancing our understanding of supradense NS matter.

A Case Study of AI-assisted Creation of a Thermodynamics Model of Precipitation Formation During Rapid Depressurization of a Vented Container

Precipitation may form in humid containers undergoing rapid depressurization. This precipitation may be liquid, i.e. fog, if the dewpoint is crossed above the freezing point of water, or direct snow crystallization if the dewpoint is crossed below the freezing point. Accurate modeling of this effect is potentially important for rapidly ascending vented containers in aircraft, spacecraft, and launch vehicles, as well as rapidly depressurizing vacuum chambers. A transient thermodynamics model of precipitation formation during the rapid depressurization of a container was developed in python. The model is written for a generic container and includes an optional water pool and water vapor source. Details of the model and results from several example cases spanning the full capabilities of the model, including a validation case, will be presented. Although the model is not novel, in contrast to prior works, this one was treated as a case study of the assistance of AI Large Language Models (LLMs) to create physical models. Impressions, performance, time, and cost of using AI for this task will be discussed.

Graphitization of banana peel – synergistic effect of Ca and other elements of the biomass on carbon structure transformation

Recently, growing interest has been observed in using calcium as an effective catalyst for graphitizing disordered carbon materials derived from biomass and bioprecursors, such as cellulose and lignin, at relatively low tem peratures (<2000 °C). Herein, it is demonstrated that in the presence of elements such as calcium, silicon, sulfur, and potassium, which are abundant in banana peel composed of cellulose and lignin base, graphitization occurs much more effectively. The addition of external calcium source, in the form of calcium carbonate, to the banana peel-derived carbon and heat-treatment of the mixture under protective atmosphere up to 1750 °C results in a significant increase in the degree of the graphitization order and local formation of graphite crystals, whereas the same preparation and heat-treatment procedure applied to carbon material derived from pristine cellulose does not lead to such effective graphitization. It is indicated that the graphitization of banana peel carbon occurs due to the synergistic effect of the external Ca-based catalyst and the internal elements present in the raw biomass, supporting the transformation of the disordered graphene-like layers into graphitic structures. These findings are important for the future production of green graphite from biomass

Small Co-doping induced magnetic and electrical transitions in single crystal CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3

CaFe⁢O 3 and CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 single crystals were grown by combing floating-zone method with high oxygen pressure treatment. Both crystals show charge disproportionation of Fe (F⁡e 4+ → F⁡e 3+ + F⁡e 5+ ) accompanied by a metal-to-insulator transition as well as a crystal structural transformation from Pbnm to 𝑃⁢2 1 /𝑛. However, the slight introduction of Co significantly suppresses the critical temperature of charge disproportionation from 290 K in CaFe⁢O 3 to 260 K in CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 . Different from the single antiferromagnetic phase transition as observed in the polycrystalline CaFe⁢O 3 , two sequential antiferromagnetic transitions are found to occur in these two single crystals with the Néel temperatures around 119 and 112 K for CaFe⁢O 3 crystal and 109 and 98 K for CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal, respectively. Neutron diffraction illustrates the formation of a spiral antiferromagnetic structure. Moreover, as the temperature further decreases to 65 K, a third magnetic transition accompanied by a second electrical transition is observed in the slightly Co-doped CaF⁢e 0.95 ⁢C⁢o 0.05 ⁢O 3 crystal. In conclusion, first-principles calculations suggest that the introduction of a moderate amount of Co and the peculiar spiral spin texture play an important role in the presence of such new magnetic and electrical transitions.
