Software Quality Assurance Plan ANSYS LSDYNA Version 2023R1

ANSYS Inc. develops and markets engineering simulation software and services used in the aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, electronics, biomedical, energy, defense, and many other industries. ANSYS is dedicated to engineering simulation and is the world’s leading software provider. ANSYS was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. ANSYS provides an engineering analysis tool combining structural, thermal, computational fluid dynamics, acoustic and electromagnetic simulation capabilities. ANSYS LS-DYNA is the most used explicit simulation program capable of simulating the response of materials to short periods of severe loading. Its many elements, contact formulations, material models, and other controls can be used to simulate complex models with control over all the details of the problem. ANSYS LS-DYNA has a vast array of capabilities to simulate extreme deformation problems using its explicit solver. Engineers can tackle simulations involving material failure and look at how the failure progresses through a part or through a system. Models with large amounts of parts or surfaces interacting with each other are also easily handled, and the interactions and load passing between complex behaviors are modeled accurately. Using computers with higher numbers of CPU cores can drastically reduce solution times. In addition, many consulting firms and hundreds of universities use ANSYS for analysis, research, and educational purposes. ANSYS is recognized worldwide as one of the most widely used and capable programs of its type. ANSYS has successfully passed over 100 customer quality system audits against American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) NQA-1 and 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix B, since the company was founded, over 60 of which have been since 1997. ANSYS has successfully passed over 100 International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 assessments. An Ethics-Based Review of Generative Artificial Intelligence: Assuring Responsible Use (Version 1.0)

The rapid expansion of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) has generated excitement regarding its potential benefits and concern over its ethical implications. Governments, corporations, and standards organizations have described ethical principles to direct GenAI's development and use; however, practical guidance for implementing these principles is limited. Addressing this gap is critical, especially considering the array of risks associated with GenAI, such as legal liabilities, privacy concerns, security threats, and potential misuse. Robust policies and procedures are critical to support responsible deployment of GenAI. This report examines Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)’s approach to promoting responsible GenAI use. Proposed initiatives include developing policies based on ethical principles, creating a governance process to review projects relative to those principles, and implementing onboarding processes for training staff. The governance framework described in this report adapts the structure and principles of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), traditionally used in human subjects research, for GenAI ethical review, providing oversight. Ethical principles guiding responsible GenAI usage include transparency and accountability, privacy, fairness, safety, security, and validity and reliability. To operationalize these principles, we propose forming a GenAI Assurance Council (GAC) that mirrors the IRB's structure. The GAC will evaluate GenAI projects across privacy, accountability, transparency, safety, security, fairness, and validity dimensions. Complementing policy and governance is AI literacy training to support staff understanding of GenAI's ethical implications. An initial training effort for AI Incubator Chat—a GenAI tool deployed at PNNL—showed promising results, underscoring the importance of clear guidelines and user accountability. Collaborative efforts and the dissemination of best practices are also discussed. The proposed GAC model and AI literacy training provide a blueprint for establishing ethical GenAI use and governance, offering practical tools to bridge the gap between ethical principles and real-world applications. The responsible integration of GenAI at PNNL entails a multifaceted approach involving policy development, ethical governance, and AI literacy training. The positive initial feedback and collaborative opportunities position PNNL to lead by example in GenAI's responsible use, reflecting a proactive stance in addressing the ethical, legal, and societal challenges associated with this emerging technology. PNNL's systematic and ethical approach to GenAI offers a model for other institutions to emulate, promoting safe and responsible technological advancements in the AI domain.

Characterization of Harsh Environments, At-Risk Microgrid Components, and Hardening Technologies (Report Version 0.1)

Microgrid implementation can help improve electrical service, reliability, and resilience for localized communities. However, they may be susceptible to damage from natural disasters and extreme weather events, which often coincide with times of greater community dependence on microgrids due to likely increased vulnerability of equipment on the main grid. Microgrid equipment can be protected against these hazards through various hardening techniques. The selection of hardening mitigations may depend on the actual risk of the hazard in the specific location and for the specific type of system, as well as cost and feasibility factors. This report summarizes a framework that can be used to characterize risk to a microgrid system from a list of natural hazards enumerated by FEMA. We also describe hardening techniques and mitigations that can be used for specific energy generation, storage, loads, and power delivery elements within a microgrid.

CalderaCast User Manual Version 1.0

CalderaCast is a user-friendly web-based tool for electrical-load forecast, providing stakeholders with a fully customizable decision-support framework that estimates the likely power draw from a possible future electric-vehicle (EV) charging station at a given location on a given day along an alternative fuel corridor (AFC). These EV charging profiles are accurately modeled in CalderaCast using the Caldera software framework developed by Idaho National Laboratories (INL), reflecting the realistic charging levels observed in actual charge events. This tool was developed as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which is quickly generating substantial interest from would-be charging station operators (CSO), large and small electric utilities, and state transportation planners, some of whom had not seriously considered EV charging previously. All these entities—with or without background in EV infrastructure—must estimate the electricity load that a proposed charging station will generate. This load forecast is critically important for a utility to properly assess the capacity of their distribution network to support the proposed station or properly size grid upgrades for potential load growth due to future EV adoption, vehicle technology improvements, or station growth. This document describes each aspect of the CalderaCast tool and provides guidance to users who are interested in utilizing the tool for their work.
