Field Demonstrations of Active Laser Ranging with Sub-mm Precision

Precision ranging between planets will provide valuable information for scientific studies of the solar system and fundamental physics. Current passive ranging techniques using retro-reflectors are limited to the Earth-Moon distance due to the 1/R? losses. We report on a laboratory realization and field implementation of active laser ranging in real-time with two terminals, emulating interplanetary distance. Sub-millimeter accuracy is demonstrated.

High Precision Thermal, Structural and Optical Analysis of an External Occulter Using a Common Model and the General Purpose Multi-Physics Analysis Tool Cielo

The efficient simulation of multidisciplinary thermo-opto-mechanical effects in precision deployable systems has for years been limited by numerical toolsets that do not necessarily share the same finite element basis, level of mesh discretization, data formats, or compute platforms. Cielo, a general purpose integrated modeling tool funded by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Exoplanet Exploration Program, addresses shortcomings in the current state of the art via features that enable the use of a single, common model for thermal, structural and optical aberration analysis, producing results of greater accuracy, without the need for results interpolation or mapping. This paper will highlight some of these advances, and will demonstrate them within the context of detailed external occulter analyses, focusing on in-plane deformations of the petal edges for both steady-state and transient conditions, with subsequent optical performance metrics including intensity distributions at the pupil and image plane.

SmallSat Precision Navigation with Low-Cost MEMS IMU Swarms

The continued advancement of small satellite-based science missions requires the solution to a number of important technical challenges. Of particular note is that small satellite missions are characterized by tight constraints on cost, mass, power, and volume that make them unable to fly the high-quality Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) required for orbital missions demanding precise orientation and positioning. Instead, small satellite missions typically fly low-cost Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) IMUs. Unfortunately, the performance characteristics of these MEMS IMUs make them ineffectual in many spaceflight applications when employed in a single IMU system configuration.

Precision Epoch of Reionization Studies with Next-Generation CMB Experiments

Future arcminute resolution polarization data from ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) observations can be used to estimate the contribution to the temperature power spectrum from the primary anisotropies and to uncover the signature of reionization near l = 1500 in the small angular-scale temperature measurements. Our projections are based on combining expected small-scale E-mode polarization measurements from Advanced ACTPol in the range 300 < l < 3000 with simulated temperature data from the full Planck mission in the low and intermediate l region, 2 < l < 2000. We show that the six basic cosmological parameters determined from this combination of data will predict the underlying primordial temperature spectrum at high multipoles to better than 1% accuracy. Assuming an efficient cleaning from multi-frequency channels of most foregrounds in the temperature data, we investigate the sensitivity to the only residual secondary component, the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) term. The CMB polarization is used to break degeneracies between primordial and secondary terms present in temperature and, in effect, to remove from the temperature data all but the residual kSZ term. We estimate a 15 sigma detection of the di use homogeneous kSZ signal from expected AdvACT temperature data at l > 1500, leading to a measurement of the amplitude of matter density fluctuations, sigma 8, at 1% precision.

Doppler Lidar for Precision Landing on Planetary Bodies with and without Atmosphere

Global Positioning System (GPS) is commonly used in terrestrial navigation for vehicle position and velocity knowledge. In the absence of a GPS signal, past landing missions to planetary bodies primarily relied on radar to provide the necessary data to execute descent and landing maneuvers. We have developed a coherent Doppler lidar, called Navigation Doppler Lidar (NDL), that offers several critical advantages com-pared to radar, including significantly higher precision with reduced size, mass, and power.

Atomically Precise Hexanuclear Ce(IV) Clusters as Functional Fluorescent Nanosensors for Rapid One-Step Detection of PFAS

Here, the presence of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment is associated with adverse health effects but measuring PFAS is challenging due to the associated high cost and technical complexities of the analysis. Here, the reactivity of atomically precise metal-oxo clusters is reported and the foundation for their use is provided as fluorescent nanosensors for PFAS detection. The material comprises crystalline, water soluble, hexanuclear cerium-oxo clusters [Ce 6 (µ 3 -O) 4 (µ 3 -OH) 4 ] 12+ decorated with glycine molecules (Ce-Gly) characterized by fluorescence emission at 353 nm. The Ce-Gly fluorescence is found sensitive to long chain carboxylated PFAS of CF 3 –(CF 2 ) n –, where n ≥ 6, such as perfluorooctanoic, perfluorononanoic and perfluorodecanoic acids. This unique reactivity leads to a change in the emission spectra in a concentration dependent manner, enabling PFAS detection through ligand exchange and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) enhancement. No significant cross-reactivity from potentially co-existing species, including sulfonated PFAS, octanoic and dodecanoic acids, humic acid, and inorganic ions is observed. With an optimal concentration of 3.3 µg mL -1 Ce-Gly, the method demonstrated detection limits of 0.24 ppb for PFOA and 0.4 ppb for PFNA. These findings highlight the potential of fluorescence-based detection strategies utilizing nanoscale probes such as Ce-Gly as fluorescent probes and nanosensors for PFAS.

Electrochemical Imaging of Precisely‐Defined Redox and Reactive Interfaces

Abstract Understanding the diverse electrochemical reactions occurring at electrode‐electrolyte interfaces (EEIs) is a critical challenge to developing more efficient energy conversion and storage technologies. Establishing a predictive molecular‐level understanding of solid electrolyte interphases (SEIs) is challenging due to the presence of multiple intertwined chemical and electrochemical processes occurring at battery electrodes. Similarly, chemical conversions in reactive electrochemical systems are often influenced by the heterogeneous distribution of active sites, surface defects, and catalyst particle sizes. In this mini review, we highlight an emerging field of interfacial science that isolates the impact of specific chemical species by preparing precisely‐defined EEIs and visualizing the reactivity of their individual components using single‐entity characterization techniques. We highlight the broad applicability and versatility of these methods, along with current state‐of‐the‐art instrumentation and future opportunities for these approaches to address key scientific challenges related to batteries, chemical separations, and fuel cells. We establish that controlled preparation of well‐defined electrodes combined with single entity characterization will be crucial to filling key knowledge gaps and advancing the theories used to describe and predict chemical and physical processes occurring at EEIs and accelerating new materials discovery for energy applications.
