Stress and buckling analysis of a double-bubble tank structure

An analytical study of a two-lobed circular arc pressure vessel (double-bubble tank) with a local perturbation from the cylindrical shape was made. It can be concluded that NASTRAN provides a good linear buckling analysis capability for structures that cannot be handled by other analysis techniques. However, solutions are relatively expensive from a computational standpoint. Two worthwhile additions to the NASTRAN program would be the inclusion of a new beam element that adequately represents the shear transfer when modeling stiffeners on a shell and the capability, in a rigid format, to keep certain prescribed loads constant during the eigenvalue extraction process.

Fabrication of magnetic bubble memory overlay

Self-contained magnetic bubble memory overlay is fabricated by process that employs epitaxial deposition to form multi-layered complex of magnetically active components on single chip. Overlay fabrication comprises three metal deposition steps followed by subtractive etch.

Research rocket test RR-1 (Black Brant VC) and RR-2 (Aerobee 170A): Investigations of the stability of bubbles in plain and fiber-reinforced metal and solidified in a near-zero-g environment

The results of the first two of a series of research rocket flights are presented. The objectives of these flights were (1) to learn about the capabilities of these rockets, (2) to learn how to interface the payloads and rockets, and (3) to process some of the composite casting demonstration capsules intended originally for Apollo 15. The capsules contained experiments for investigating the stability of gas bubbles in plain and fiber-reinforced metal melted and solidified in a near-zero-g (0.0119g) environment. The characteristics of the two research rockets, an Aerobee 170A and a Black Brant VC, used to obtain the periods of near-zero-g and the temperature control unit used for processing the contents of the two experiment capsules are discussed.

Investigation of chemical vapor deposition of garnet films for bubble domain memories

The important process parameters and control required to grow reproducible device quality ferrimagnetic films by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were studied. The investigation of the critical parameters in the CVD growth process led to the conclusion that the required reproducibility of film properties cannot be achieved with individually controlled separate metal halide sources. Therefore, the CVD growth effort was directed toward replacement of the halide sources with metallic sources with the ultimate goal being the reproducible growth of complex garnet compositions utilizing a single metal alloy source. The characterization of the YGdGaIG films showed that certain characteristics of this material, primarily the low domain wall energy and the large temperature sensitivity, severely limited its potential as a useful material for bubble domain devices. Consequently, at the time of the change from halide to metallic sources, the target film compositions were shifted to more useful materials such as YGdTmGaIG, YEuGaIG and YSmGaIG.

Modeling of a bubble-memory organization with self-checking translators to achieve high reliability.

Study of the design and modeling of a highly reliable bubble-memory system that has the capabilities of: (1) correcting a single 16-adjacent bit-group error resulting from failures in a single basic storage module (BSM), and (2) detecting with a probability greater than 0.99 any double errors resulting from failures in BSM's. The results of the study justify the design philosophy adopted of employing memory data encoding and a translator to correct single group errors and detect double group errors to enhance the overall system reliability.

Application of the hydrogen-bubble technique for velocity measurements in thin liquid films.

A unique adaptation of the hydrogen-bubble flow visualization method was applied to measure velocity profiles and film thicknesses of very thin films on an inclined plane wall. Data were obtained in the three flow regions for a developing falling film with an initially uniform velocity profile and thickness less than or equal to 0.1 in. The measured profiles compared more favorably with parabolic profiles in the intermediate fully developed region than in the initial developing region. However, measured film thicknesses compared favorably with a simplified solution of the integral momentum equation based on parabolic velocity profiles. The results confirm the theoretical prediction that a relatively long distance may be required even for a thin film before nonaccelerating flow with a constant film thickness is obtained and Nusselt's classical analysis applies. The experimental technique was shown to be a practical experimental method for obtaining data for the two-dimensional laminar flow of thin liquid films.

Magnetic bubble domain memories

Some attractive features of Bubble Domain Memory and its relation to existing technologies are discussed. Two promising applications are block access mass memory and tape recorder replacement. The required chip capabilities for these uses are listed, and the specifications for a block access mass memory designed to fit between core and HPT disk are presented. A feasibility model for a tape recorder replacement is introduced.
