Investigating the Combustion Performance of Dual Fuel Combustion with Diesel and Port Injected Hydrogen in a Large Bore Locomotive Engine

The heavy-duty transportation sector has primarily relied on conventional diesel combustion engines given their reliability and high thermal efficiency relative to spark ignition engines, but increased focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions has led to investigation into alternative fuels. Gaseous hydrogen fuel has garnered a great deal of recent interest in the engine community given it has zero carbon, but hydrogen is not available at the scale and cost that petroleum fuels are currently available, and this is a barrier to adoption for industries that are looking to decarbonize their operations. Because of the fuel flexibility provided, dual fuel technology offers a pathway for some industries to adopt hydrogen as a fuel source while maintaining sufficient flexibility in times and locations where the new fuel is not yet available. This computational study investigates dual fuel combustion in a large bore locomotive engine architecture using direct injected diesel and port injected gaseous hydrogen fuel. With an optimal port fuel injection configuration from previous work, simulations of varying substitution ratio, compression ratio, manifold air temperature, diesel injection timing, and diesel injection pressure were performed to understand their effect on combustion performance. Results indicated that both increased substitution ratio and higher intake air temperature accelerates hydrogen flame propagation and can result in high peak cylinder pressures. Additionally, diesel injection timing and injection pressure were demonstrated as effective methods for controlling dual fuel combustion heat release rates.

The 1975 GSFC Battery Workshop

The proceedings of the 1975 Goddard Space Flight Center Battery Workshop are presented. The major topics of discussion were nickel cadmium batteries and, to a lesser extent, nickel hydrogen batteries. Battery design, manufacturing techniques, testing programs, and electrochemical characteristics were considered. The utilization of these batteries for spacecraft power supplies was given particular attention.

Resources for E-Mobility Program Implementation [Slides]

The Energy to Communities (E2C) peer-learning cohort program provides technical assistance to groups of 15 community entities around a common energy topic over the course of 6 months. Every month, participants join a virtual meeting where they hear from experts and exchange strategies and best practices with their peers. This cohort, "Successful Energy Project Implementation" will explore common challenges in implementing energy projects and learn strategies to turn project plans into reality. Each participant will focus on a local energy project or priority as a cornerstone for their learning throughout the series. This presentation overviews the basics of developing electric mobility projects with emphasis on leveraging the right tools to advance technical scoping and program design.

Advances in Entry Systems Modeling: Modeling Summer Visit 2025 Technical Reports

This NASA Technical Memorandum presents the collective work carried out during the Modeling Summer Visit (MSV) 2025, a collaborative research program between NASA Ames Research Center and three leading European research institutions: the University of Bordeaux, the von Karman Institute (VKI), and Ecole Polytechnique. Held from July 7th to August 1st, 2025, the NASA ARC MSV program brought together 42 researchers from Europe to work alongside NASA staff on 22 projects in entry systems modeling. The program was organized by Bruno Dias, Sergio Fraile-Izquierdo, and Jeremie Meurisse from Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc., in collaboration with Marc Massot (Ecole Polytechnique), Jean Lachaud (University of Bordeaux), and Thierry Magin (VKI). The MSV program traces its origins to an initiative started by Nagi N. Mansour in 2018, with this 2025 edition representing a consolidation and expansion of that original vision. The projects were organized into six thematic groups: Porous Media, Numerical Methods, Plasma/Rarefied Methods, Experimental Reconstruction, Flow and Material Coupling Methods, and Transition and High-Speed Flows. Throughout the four-week program, participants presented their work in three public presentations (July 7th, July 21st, and August 1st), allowing for continuous feedback and discussion of their evolving research.

Battery Control Boards for Li-Ion Batteries on Mars Exploration Rovers

Rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries have been operating successfully on both Spirit and Opportunity rovers for the last two years, which includes six months of Assembly Launch and Test Operations (ATLO), seven months of cruise and about eleven months of surface operations. The Battery Control Boards designed and fabricated in-house would protect cells against overcharge and over-discharge and provide cell balance. Their performance has thus far been quite satisfactory. The ground data o the mission simulation battery project little capacity loss of less than 3% during cruise and 180 sols. Batteries are poised to extend the mission beyond six months, if not a couple of years.

Ultrasonic Washer–Dryer System for Space Habitats: Design Upgrades and Parabolic Flight Readiness

Clothing makes up nearly 25% of all non-food supplies sent to the International Space Station (ISS). To support sustainable human missions in deep space, NASA’s Life Support and Habitation Systems Focus Area looks to advance technologies to support and improve logistics. Our team is creating a compact ultrasonic clothing washer/dryer system that bypasses traditional limitations and is suitable for space. Thermal drying uses a lot of energy to evaporate water, while our ultrasonic drying method offers a quicker, more efficient alternative. It uses piezoelectric transducers to vibrate textiles at the micron scale, mechanically removing water as cold mist rather than evaporating it. This speeds up drying and reduces energy use, no matter the fabric makeup. This paper details recent upgrades to a full-scale ultrasonic washer–dryer system, readying it for parabolic flight testing. Improvements include an enhanced human–machine interface, better packaging, and optimized performance and control. We also present extensive pre-flight ground tests conducted to ensure reliability and identify potential risks. Collaborating with P&G, we report preliminary cleaning tests using various detergents. These results lay a crucial foundation for the laundry system designed specifically for space. By cutting clothing-related payload and waste by over 97%, this technology supports long-term human exploration missions on the ISS, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
