High Dynamic Range AFM Cantilever With a Collocated Piezoelectric Actuator-Sensor Pair

We present a novel approach to fundamentally eliminate electrical feedthrough (cross-talk) signal in self-sensing piezoelectric microcantilevers, used in dynamic mode atomic force microscopy (AFM). The probe is an Si microcantilever on which a two-layer piezoelectric stack transducer is microfabricated. The top transducer in the stack functions as an actuator, while the bottom transducer is used as a deflection sensor. This arrangement leads to a collocated actuator-sensor pair that co-exist on the same surface area. We report experimental results that establish the sensor's ability to capture the full dynamic range of the cantilever with minimal feedthrough from the actuator.

Evaluation of a low-density polyimide foam in a dynamic, high temperature environment

A low density polyimide foam material was tested in an arc tunnel to determine its potential for heat shield application on aerospace vehicles. The results show that the material has some reuse potential at surface temperatures as high as 750 K. When a black refractory paint was applied to the surface of the material, the surface recession was negligible at 750 K. An analytical thermal conductivity was derived for this material which, combined with measured thermal property values, can be used to make preliminary design thickness calculations for heat shield applications.

High dynamic global positioning system receiver

A Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver having a number of channels, receives an aggregate of pseudorange code time division modulated signals. The aggregate is converted to baseband and then to digital form for separate processing in the separate channels. A fast fourier transform processor computes the signal energy as a function of Doppler frequency for each correlation lag, and a range and frequency estimator computes estimates of pseudorange, and frequency. Raw estimates from all channels are used to estimate receiver position, velocity, clock offset and clock rate offset in a conventional navigation and control unit, and based on the unit that computes smoothed estimates for the next measurement interval.

The nature of the interior of Uranus based on studies of planetary ices at high dynamic pressure

Data from the Voyager II spacecraft showed that Uranus has a large magnetic field with geometry similar to an offset tilted dipole. To interpret the origin of the magnetic field, measurements were made of electrical conductivity and equation-of-state data of the planetary 'ices' ammonia, methane, and 'synthetic Uranus' at shock pressures and temperatures up to 75 gigapascals and 5000 K. These pressures and temperatures correspond to conditions at the depths at which the surface magnetic field is generated. Above 40 gigapascals the conductivities of synthetic Uranus, water, and ammonia plateau at about 20/(ohm-cm), providing an upper limit for the electrical conductivity used in kinematic or dynamo calculations. The nature of materials at the extreme conditions in the interior is discussed.

High dynamic range infrared radiometry and imaging

The use is described of cryogenically cooled, extrinsic silicon infrared detectors in an unconventional mode of operation which offers an unusually large dynamic range. The system performs intensity-to-frequency conversion at the focal plane via simple circuits with very low power consumption. The incident IR intensity controls the repetition rate of short duration output pulses over a pulse rate dynamic range of about 10(6). Theory indicates the possibility of monotonic and approx. linear response over the full dynamic range. A comparison between the theoretical and the experimental results shows that the model provides a reasonably good description of experimental data. Some measurements of survivability with a very intense IR source were made on these devices and found to be very encouraging. Evidence continues to indicate that some variations in interpulse time intervals are deterministic rather than probabilistic.

High-Dynamic-Range Fiber-Optic Link For Microwave Signals

Ultrastable fiber-optic communications system transmits microwave signals between antenna sites of Deep Space Network (DSN) and central processing station several kilometers away. Permits relocation of critical components from front-end areas of DSN antennas to central location, permitting radio-frequency (RF) antenna arraying, improving DSN flexibility, maintainability, and system performance. Also useful in commercial analog and digital communications.

Results From F-18B Stability and Control Parameter Estimation Flight Tests at High Dynamic Pressures

A maximum-likelihood output-error parameter estimation technique has been used to obtain stability and control derivatives for the NASA F-18B Systems Research Aircraft. This work has been performed to support flight testing of the active aeroelastic wing (AAW) F-18A project. The goal of this research is to obtain baseline F-18 stability and control derivatives that will form the foundation of the aerodynamic model for the AAW aircraft configuration. Flight data have been obtained at Mach numbers between 0.85 and 1.30 and at dynamic pressures ranging between 600 and 1500 lbf/sq ft. At each test condition, longitudinal and lateral-directional doublets have been performed using an automated onboard excitation system. The doublet maneuver consists of a series of single-surface inputs so that individual control-surface motions cannot be correlated with other control-surface motions. Flight test results have shown that several stability and control derivatives are significantly different than prescribed by the F-18B aerodynamic model. This report defines the parameter estimation technique used, presents stability and control derivative results, compares the results with predictions based on the current F-18B aerodynamic model, and shows improvements to the nonlinear simulation using updated derivatives from this research.

Power supply with air core transformer and seperated power supplies for high dynamic range

A power supply for a quadrupole mass spectrometer which operates using an RF signal. The RF signal is controllable via a feedback loop. The feedback loop is from the output, through a comparator, and compared to a digital signal. An air core transformer is used to minimize the weight. The air core transformer is driven via two out of phase sawtooth signals which drive opposite ends of the transformer.

High-Accuracy, High-Dynamic-Range Phase-Measurement System

A digital phase meter has been designed to satisfy stringent requirements for measuring differences between phases of radio-frequency (RF) subcarrier signals modulated onto laser beams involved in the operation of a planned space-borne gravitational-wave-detecting heterodyne laser interferometer. The capabilities of this system could also be used in diverse terrestrial applications that involve measurement of signal phases, including metrology, navigation, and communications.

Performance of Doppler Lidar Velocity and Range Sensor Operating in Highly Dynamic Environments

The operation of a coherent Doppler lidar, developed by NASA for missions to planetary bodies, is analyzed and its projected performance is described. The lidar transmits three laser beams at different but fixed directions and measures line-of-sight range and velocity along each beam. The three line-of-sight measurements are then combined in order to determine the three components of the vehicle velocity vector and its altitude relative to the ground. Operating from over five kilometers altitude, the NDL provides velocity and range data with a few cm/sec and a few meters precision, respectively, depending on the vehicle dynamics. This paper explains the sources of measurements error and analyzes the impacts of vehicle dynamics on the lidar performance.
