Postanaerobic Digestion Manure Fibers as a Renewable Source of Lignin-Derived Aromatic Compounds for Microbial Upgrading

Abstract Postanaerobic digestion manure fibers are an abundant solid residue that remains underutilized. The substantial lignocellulosic content of digested manure opens the possibility of using it as a renewable resource for producing valuable products. In this study, we performed compositional and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses to determine lignin content and aromatic composition of these fibers. Additionally, alkaline-based treatment and reductive catalytic fractionation were evaluated as two different processes to produce aromatic-rich streams. The liquor from the alkaline treatment was subsequently utilized for microbial upgrading to produce 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylic acid (PDC). The results showed that lignin in manure fibers represents 30% of the biomass (dry weight basis), with a ∼26% abundance of β-ether-linked aromatics and ∼13% p-coumarate moieties, indicating that the amount of lignin in the postanaerobic biomass is comparable to a moderately pretreated plant biomass. The alkaline treatment released 5.6 g aromatics/kg fibers, while reductive catalytic fractionation produced 14.0 g aromatics/kg fibers. A bioreactor operated in fed-batch mode produced a yield of ∼1 mol of PDC/mol measured aromatics at a rate of 0.2 g PDC/L·h and a titer of 2.6 g PDC/L. This study demonstrates how postanaerobic digestion manure fibers could be used in a circular bioeconomy by harnessing their lignocellulosic content to extract aromatic compounds and use them for obtaining valuable chemicals via microbial upgrading.

Resonant scattering at the center of the galaxy cluster PKS 0745-191 with XRISM

We report evidence of the resonant scattering effect at the center of the galaxy cluster PKS 0745-191 with XRISM. We analyzed XRISM/Resolve commissioning-phase observations of the distant cluster PKS 0745-191 ($z = 0.103$) with a $54$ ks exposure. The gain drift was corrected using the onboard modulated X-ray source (MXS), and spectra were extracted from all the pixels that were well illuminated by MXS, the core region (four central pixels, $\sim$100 kpc), and the surrounding region. A single-temperature collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) model fits the full field-of-view spectrum with $kT \approx 6$ keV and a turbulent velocity of ${\approx}120$ km s$^{-1}$. From the core ($r < 50$ kpc) spectrum, we detected a ${\approx}22\%$ suppression of the Fe xxv He$\alpha$ resonance (w) line relative to the CIE prediction. We performed a Monte Carlo simulation to calculate the resonant scattering (RS) effect using radial profiles from Chandra data. The RS-inferred turbulence agrees with that by Resolve line-broadening, demonstrating that RS provides an independent and consistent constraint on ICM turbulence. These results highlight XRISM/Resolve’s potential for turbulence studies in galaxy clusters.

DESI Strong Lens Foundry. III. Keck Spectroscopy for Strong Lenses Discovered Using Residual Neural Networks

We present spectroscopic data of strong lenses and their source galaxies using the Keck Near-Infrared Echellette Spectrometer (NIRES) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), providing redshifts necessary for nearly all strong-lensing applications with these systems, especially the extraction of physical parameters from lensing modeling. These strong lenses were found in the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys using residual neural networks and followed up by our Hubble Space Telescope program, with all systems displaying unambiguous lensed arcs. With NIRES, we target eight lensed sources at redshifts difficult to measure in the optical range and determine the source redshifts for six, between z s = 1.675 and 3.332. DESI observed one of the remaining source redshifts, as well as an additional source redshift within the six systems. The two systems with nondetections by NIRES were observed for a considerably shorter 600 s at high airmass. Combining NIRES infrared spectroscopy with optical spectroscopy from our DESI Strong Lensing Secondary Target Program, these results provide the complete lens and source redshifts for six systems, a resource for refining automated strong lens searches in future deep- and wide-field imaging surveys and addressing a range of questions in astrophysics and cosmology.

Method and apparatus for providing thermal wear leveling

Exemplary embodiments provide thermal wear spreading among a plurality of thermal die regions in an integrated circuit or among dies by using die region wear-out data that represents a cumulative amount of time each of a number of thermal die regions in one or more dies has spent at a particular temperature level. In one example, die region wear-out data is stored in persistent memory and is accrued over a life of each respective thermal region so that a long term monitoring of temperature levels in the various die regions is used to spread thermal wear among the thermal die regions. In one example, spreading thermal wear is done by controlling task execution such as thread execution among one or more processing cores, dies and/or data access operations for a memory.
