Cost-effective valorization of 2,3-butanediol to high-value chemicals and jet fuel

Here, this work outlines an optimized process for converting 2,3-butanediol (BDO) into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and C4 chemicals. BDO is reactively separated from fermentation broth by forming dioxolanes, which are converted to isobutyraldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and 1,3-butadiene. These intermediates are reduced and dehydrated over Cu/ZSM-5 to form alkenes, which can be oligomerized and hydrotreated to jet-range alkanes. Previous BDO-dioxolane-alkene processes are limited by the requirement for a continuous aldehyde source for dioxolane formation. Brønsted acidic zeolites catalyze dioxolane deacetalization to form isobutyraldehyde and MEK in a >2:1 molar ratio, providing an internal, recyclable aldehyde source. Dioxolane formation optimization was performed to achieve >95% dioxolane yields over Amberlyst-15 and minimize isobutyraldehyde recycle. The overall BDO-dioxolane-fuel process yields an alkane mixture that enables at least a 50% v/v blend with Jet-A. Techno-economic analyses and life cycle assessments for this BDO-dioxolane-fuel process yield scenarios with <$2.50 per gallon gas equivalent and >58% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Proactive Wildfire Management: A Remote Sensing and Multimodal CNN-MLP Architecture for Ignition Risk Forecasting

As the frequency and intensity of wildfires increase, with fire seasons now starting earlier and ending later than they have over the past decades, current monitoring systems, such as lookout towers and satellites, are hindered by cloud cover, low-resolution imagery, and static data gaps that fail to track vegetation moisture levels fast enough to catch rapid pre-ignition changes. This report proposes a Machine Learning-enabled Wildfire Ignition Prediction framework that combines satellite monitoring with dynamic and high-resolution remote sensing from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms. The method would use multispectral and thermal data from the Landsat program to create a baseline for vegetation health, calculating a two-band Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI2) and the moisture content of the vegetation. These inputs will later be fused with microscale UAV weather data, including thermal hotspots found through thick canopies, hyperspectral chemical signatures of pre-visual combustion, and local weather streams. The multispectral satellite, multispectral Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and thermal data would then be processed through a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), alongside a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) for the micro-weather telemetry. The outputs of these networks would be fused into a single feature representation and passed through a final prediction network to generate real-time ignition risk scores and hotspot alerts. Model performance would be assessed using standard classification metrics, including a Receiver Operating Characteristic - Area Under the Curve (ROC AUC) and F1 score. This system would allow first responders to identify high-risk zones and intervene before ignition occurs, improving emergency response time compared to current approaches.

Estradiol associations with brain functional connectivity in postmenopausal women

Abstract Objective Previous studies have found that estrogens play a role in functional connectivity in the brain; however, little research has been done regarding how estradiol is associated with functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between estradiol and functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. Methods Structural and blood oxygenation level–dependent resting-state magnetic resonance imaging scans of 88 cognitively healthy postmenopausal individuals were obtained along with blood samples collected the same day as the magnetic resonance imaging to assess hormone levels. We generated connectivity values in CONN toolbox version 20.b, an SPM-based software. Results A regression analysis was run using estradiol level and regions of interest (ROI), including the hippocampus, parahippocampus, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and precuneus. Estradiol level was found to enhance parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left functional connectivity during ROI-to-ROI regression analysis. Estradiol enhanced functional connectivity between the parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left and the precuneus as well as the parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left and parahippocampal gyrus posterior division right. An exploratory analysis showed that years since the final menstrual period was related to enhanced connectivity between regions within the frontoparietal network. Conclusions These results illustrated the relationship between estradiol level and functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. They have implications for understanding how the functioning of the brain changes for individuals after menopause that may eventually lead to changes in cognition and behavior in older ages.

Understanding the origin of early-type dwarfs: the spectrophotometric study of CGCG014−074

ABSTRACT Early-type dwarf galaxies constitute a prevalent population in the central regions of rich groups and clusters in the local Universe. These low-luminosity and low-mass stellar systems play a fundamental role in the assembly of the luminous galaxies observed today, according to the Lambda cold dark matter hierarchical theory. The origin of early-type dwarfs has been linked to the transformation of disc galaxies interacting with the intracluster medium, especially in dense environments. However, the existence of low-luminosity early-type galaxies in low-density environments presents a challenge to this scenario. This study presents a comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the early-type dwarf galaxy CGCG014−074 using deep Gemini GMOS (Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) data, focusing on its peculiarities and evolutionary implications. CGCG014−074 exhibits distinct features, including a rotating inner disc, an extended stellar formation with a quiescent phase since about 2 Gyr ago, and the presence of boxy isophotes. From the kinematic analysis, we confirm CGCG014−074 as a nucleated early-type dwarf galaxy with embedded disc. The study of its stellar population parameters using different methods provides significant insights into the galaxy’s evolutionary history. These results show an old and metal-poor nucleus (${\sim}9.3$ Gyr and $\mathrm{[Z/H]}\sim -0.84$ dex), while the stellar disc is younger (${\sim}4.4$ Gyr) with a higher metallicity ($\mathrm{[Z/H]}\sim -0.40$ dex). These distinctive features collectively position CGCG014−074 as a likely building block galaxy that has evolved passively throughout its history.

Fine-Grained Power and Energy Attribution on AMD GPU/APU-Based Exascale Nodes

Modern exascale GPU- and APU-based systems provide multiple power and energy sensors, but differences in scope, update rate, timing, and filtering complicate the attribution of short-lived accelerator activity. This paper presents a methodology to characterize and correct these effects on Cray EX systems with AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs (Frontier) and MI300A APUs (Portage). Using controlled square-wave workloads, we quantify update intervals, delay, aliasing, and variability across up to 512 GPUs and 480 APUs with on-chip (rocm-smi/amd-smi) and off-chip Cray Power Management sensors. We reconstruct power from cumulative energy counters to achieve faster response times, validate it against on-chip, off-chip, and node-level sensors, and integrate the resulting streams into a Score-P/PAPI-based tool for time-aligned, phase-level attribution. Applied to rocHPL, rocHPL-MxP, and HPG-MxP, the method separates energy savings due to reduced runtime from changes in power. Mixed precision reduces node energy on Frontier by 79% for rocHPL-MxP and 31% for HPG-MxP, with similar trends on Portage. These results provide portable guidance for sensor validation and power-aware optimization on current and future exascale systems.

Flame retardant biogenic building insulation materials from hemp fiber

Biogenic thermal insulation materials are in high demand because of its carbon-sequestration nature. However, high flammability, moisture condensation, and relatively high thermal conductivity of biogenic material are major concerns for sustainable building applications. In this study, we report the fire-retardant cellulose xerogel insulation nanocomposites derived from hemp fiber recycling and silica xerogel, in which the boric acid treatment improves its fire retardancy. The as-prepared materials show a low thermal conductivity of 31.3 mW/m K, high flexural modulus of 665 MPa, hydrophobicity with the water contact angle of 115°, and fire retardancy with 30% weight loss over a period of burning time 10 min. Overall, this work provides an effective method for the synthesis of fire-retardant biogenic thermal insulation materials and shows a promising way for next-generation bio-based insulation materials.

Tunable Conversion of Poly(Acrylic Acid) to Vinyl Methyl Ether Copolymers via Electrochemical Decarboxylation

Recognizing the potential of polymer-to-polymer transformations for plastics valorization, a new electrochemical strategy for the decarboxylative functionalization of polyacrylates has been developed. In contrast to most electrochemical approaches to plastic waste valorization that use small-molecule mediators or only form deconstruction products, this report describes one of the first direct electrochemical redox upconversions of a commodity polymer and involves activation of poly(acrylic acid), a material commonly found in disposable diapers and other personal hygiene products. Via electrochemical decarboxylation, poly(acrylic acid) is converted to methyl ether-containing copolymers. Although methods to prepare the 1:1 regularly alternating poly(vinyl methyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) are known, routes to generate copolymers with variable levels of vinyl methyl ether and acrylate moieties are unknown, but such polymers may have utility in similar applications, such as dentifrices. Tunable conversions with up to 62 mol% vinyl methyl ether content were achieved via controlled-current electrolyses at >100 mA. This approach enables efficient access to copolymers with broad range of comonomer content from a common waste polymer starting material.

AutoSourceID-Classifier: Star-galaxy classification using a convolutional neural network with spatial information

Aims.Traditional star-galaxy classification techniques often rely on feature estimation from catalogs, a process susceptible to introducing inaccuracies, thereby potentially jeopardizing the classification’s reliability. Certain galaxies, especially those not manifesting as extended sources, can be misclassified when their shape parameters and flux solely drive the inference. We aim to create a robust and accurate classification network for identifying stars and galaxies directly from astronomical images. Methods. The AutoSourceID-Classifier (ASID-C) algorithm developed for this work uses 32x32 pixel single filter band source cutouts generated by the previously developed AutoSourceID-Light (ASID-L) code. By leveraging convolutional neural networks (CNN) and additional information about the source position within the full-field image, ASID-C aims to accurately classify all stars and galaxies within a survey. Subsequently, we employed a modified Platt scaling calibration for the output of the CNN, ensuring that the derived probabilities were effectively calibrated, delivering precise and reliable results. Results. We show that ASID-C, trained on MeerLICHT telescope images and using the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) morphological classification, is a robust classifier and outperforms similar codes such as SourceExtractor. To facilitate a rigorous comparison, we also trained an eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model on tabular features extracted by SourceExtractor. While this XGBoost model approaches ASID-C in performance metrics, it does not offer the computational efficiency and reduced error propagation inherent in ASID-C’s direct image-based classification approach. ASID-C excels in low signal-to-noise ratio and crowded scenarios, potentially aiding in transient host identification and advancing deep-sky astronomy.

Mitigating Grazing Flow Impedance Eduction Errors in Additively Manufactured Porous Liners

Additively manufactured porous metamaterials, including triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) cores, are promising candidates for aeroengine liners but often behave as extended-reacting treatments under grazing flow. Standard impedance eduction procedures assume locally-reacting behavior and can yield physically inconsistent results for such materials. This study evaluates internal partitions (thin solid walls inserted at regular intervals along the liner’s streamwise extent) as a means of suppressing internal streamwise propagation to improve eduction consistency. Six TPMS configurations were tested in the NASA Langley Grazing Flow Impedance Tube (GFIT) at partition spacings of 4′′, 2′′, and 1′′, as well as unpartitioned, and at Mach numbers up to 0.3. For most geometries, 2′′ partition spacing eliminated impedance discontinuities and substantially improved Prony correlation, though effectiveness varied with core topology. Partitions also altered the acoustic response of the liners: resistance increased, resonance frequencies shifted downward, and peak attenuation decreased while bandwidth broadened in some cases. Because partitions modify the liner itself, the educed impedance characterizes the partitioned system rather than the original unpartitioned core. These results establish partitioning as a practical pathway toward liners that are more compatible with standard eduction methods, while demonstrating that the intervention is itself an acoustic design change.

Distribution of Extraterrestrial Nucleobases, Other N-Heterocycles, and Their Precursors in A Sample From Asteroid Bennu

The recent discovery of all five canonical nucleobases in samples from Bennu provides compelling evidence that some of life’s ingredients were synthesized abiotically in the parent body of this asteroid and/or its precedent components. However, due to the sample availability and the limited method for the analysis, the detailed distribution of nucleobases in the samples remains elusive. Here we report the concentrations of a diverse suite of nitrogen (N)-heterocycles including nucleobases extracted by 2% and 20% hydrochloric acid from a homogenized Bennu sample. The detection of both canonical and non-canonical nucleobase pairs confirms that these biologically important compounds are extraterrestrial. Pyrimidines are more abundant than purines—like the Orgueil meteorite, but unlike the Murchison meteorite and asteroid Ryugu samples—suggesting preferential synthesis in ammonia-rich ices from the outer Solar System. The distribution of other N-heterocycles is consistent with extensive aqueous alteration on the parent body. High concentrations of urea underscore its role in N-heterocycle synthesis. Our findings offer important information on the prebiotic inventory of N-heterocycles in the Solar System.

Three-chamber electrochemical reactor for selective lithium extraction from brine

Efficient lithium recovery from geothermal brines is crucial for the battery industry. Current electrochemical separation methods struggle with the simultaneous presence of Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ because these cations are similar to Li + , making it challenging to separate effectively. We address these challenges with a three-chamber reactor featuring a polymer porous solid electrolyte in the middle layer. This design improves the transference number of Li + (t Li+ ) by 2.1 times compared to the two-chamber reactor and also reduces the chlorine evolution reaction, a common side reaction in electrochemical lithium extraction, to only 6.4% in Faradaic Efficiency. Employing a lithium-ion conductive glass ceramic (LICGC) membrane, the reactor achieved high t Li+ of 97.5% in LiOH production from simulated brine, while the concentrations of Na + K + , Mg 2+ , and Ca 2+ are below the detection limit. Electrochemical experiments and surface analysis elucidated the cation transport mechanism, highlighting the impact of Na + on Li + migration at the LICGC interface.

Monolayer Films of Binary Metal Oxide Nanoparticles for Carbon Nanotube Synthesis

Binary metal oxide nanoparticles (biMO-NPs) combining transition and main-group metals with well-organized atomic architectures have unique potential as robust and economical heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, metal oxide nanoparticles (CoAlxOy) using cobalt and aluminum were synthesized, and their structure, morphology, and chemical composition were investigated using various characterization techniques. The biMO-NPs, which had a Gaussian-type size distribution (∼6 nm), were assembled on plain silicon substrates modified chemically with linker molecules bearing suitable end groups. Surface analysis revealed an ordered, uniform, close-packed arrangement of biMO-NPs forming a monolayer architecture with nanoscale thickness (∼12 nm), high surface uniformity, and negligible defects. The nanoparticle monolayer film (NP-MF) was employed as a catalyst to grow carbon nanotube (CNT) forests via the thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, similar to those grown from catalyst thin films deposited by physical vapor deposition. Structural characterization confirmed the growth of a dense, uniform, high-quality vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VA-CNT) forest with a length of ∼125 µm, which is comparable to the VA-CNTs grown from expensive thin films. Thus, CNT growth was successfully catalyzed by the biMO-NPs, highlighting a simple and inexpensive alternative for catalyst deposition. In this innovative wet-chemistry approach, the catalyst and catalyst support are combined within a single nanoparticle before NP-MF assembly. Interestingly, this approach provides a scalable and cost-effective pathway for CNT growth, eliminating the need for expensive thin deposition techniques.

A light weight lead-acid battery (30) having a positive terminal (36) and a negative terminal (34) and including one or more cells or grid stacks having a plurality of vertically stacked conductive monoplates (10, 20) with positive active material and negative active material deposited on alternating plates in the cell or grid stack. Electrolyte layers (26, 28) positioned between each monoplate are included to provide a battery cell having four sides which is capable of being electrically charged and discharged. Two vertical positive bus bars (42, 43) are provided on opposite sides of the battery cell for connecting the monoplates (10) with positive active material together in parallel current conducting relation. In addition, two negative bus bars (38, 39) on opposite sides of the battery cell each being adjacent the positive bus bars are provided for connecting the monoplates (20) with negative active material together in parallel current conducting relation. The positive (42, 43) and negative (38, 39) bus bars not only provide a low resistance method for connecting the plurality of conductive monoplates of their respective battery terminals (36, 34) but also provides support and structural strength to the battery cell structure. In addition, horizontal orientation of monoplates (10, 20) is provided in a vertical stacking arrangement to reduce electrolyte stratification and short circuiting due to flaking of positive and negative active materials from the monoplates.

Integral Nuclear Data and Benchmarking Needs for Fusion Energy Systems

Fusion energy systems are currently being designed and optimized using radiation transport codes. To deal with the unique environment inside a fusion-based system, many of these designs incorporate novel materials able to withstand the high radiation fields, ensure adequate cooling and thermal protection, and produce tritium. Validation plays a vital role in building trust in the predictive power of these models and computational methods. Validation of a code consists of modeling documented real-world experiments and comparing the code-predicted response to the measured response. Adequate validation requires measured responses from real-world experiments, also known as integral data, that mimic the system being designed, including materials, impinging radiation, and temperature, among other variables. The most trusted integral data are experimental responses that have been through a rigorous benchmarking process that develops a recommended computational model and evaluates all experimental uncertainties. Finally, there are a few research groups around the world that have been producing integral data for fusion applications, but a substantial investment is needed to address the unique validation needs of the fusion community.

Single-crystal NMC622 from combustion-assisted solid-state synthesis: Tunable particle size, voltage-dependent stability, and Li-ion diffusion

Cost-effective and scalable synthesis of single-crystal lithium–metal-oxide cathodes with controlled size and morphology remains challenging for advancing high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Here, we demonstrate a solution combustion–assisted solid-state method for producing single-crystal NMC622 with tunable particle size at various lithium stoichiometries. Structural and electronic characteristics were probed using synchrotron-XANES, EXAFS, XRD and XPS, confirming well-defined coordination environments and phase purity up to Li ≈ 1.3. The electrochemical behavior of LixNMC (x = 1.0 and 1.3) single crystals was evaluated across 2.8–4.3 V and 2.8–4.7 V windows to elucidate the effects of lithium content and operating voltage. At 2.8–4.3V, Li1.3NMC exhibits higher initial capacity due to its larger lithium inventory, while Li1.0NMC shows superior long-term retention driven by its larger crystal size and reduced structural distortion. Increasing the cutoff voltage to 4.7 V enhances the initial capacity of both compositions by 17–25%, but long-term capacity retention ultimately converges to values comparable to those at 4.3 V due to voltage-induced degradation, where Li+ diffusion constant remains lying ranging from 10−12 –10−11 cm2s−1. Overall, this study establishes a scalable combustion-assisted route for synthesizing tunable single-crystal NMC622 and highlights the interplay between lithium stoichiometry, particle size, and voltage window in governing cathode stability.

An Investigation of State-Space Model Fidelity for SSME Data

In previous studies, a variety of unsupervised anomaly detection techniques for anomaly detection were applied to SSME (Space Shuttle Main Engine) data. The observed results indicated that the identification of certain anomalies were specific to the algorithmic method under consideration. This is the reason why one of the follow-on goals of these previous investigations was to build an architecture to support the best capabilities of all algorithms. We appeal to that goal here by investigating a cascade, serial architecture for the best performing and most suitable candidates from previous studies. As a precursor to a formal ROC (Receiver Operating Characteristic) curve analysis for validation of resulting anomaly detection algorithms, our primary focus here is to investigate the model fidelity as measured by variants of the AIC (Akaike Information Criterion) for state-space based models. We show that placing constraints on a state-space model during or after the training of the model introduces a modest level of suboptimality. Furthermore, we compare the fidelity of all candidate models including those embodying the cascade, serial architecture. We make recommendations on the most suitable candidates for application to subsequent anomaly detection studies as measured by AIC-based criteria.

Hybrid Data‐Driven Discovery of High‐Performance Silver Selenide‐Based Thermoelectric Composites

Optimizing material compositions often enhances thermoelectric performances. However, the large selection of possible base elements and dopants results in a vast composition design space that is too large to systematically search using solely domain knowledge. To address this challenge, a hybrid data-driven strategy that integrates Bayesian optimization (BO) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed to optimize the composition of five elements (Ag, Se, S, Cu, and Te) in AgSe-based thermoelectric materials. Data is collected from the literature to provide prior knowledge for the initial GPR model, which is updated by actively collected experimental data during the iteration between BO and experiments. Within seven iterations, the optimized AgSe-based materials prepared using a simple high-throughput ink mixing and blade coating method deliver a high power factor of 2100 µW m −1 K −2 , which is a 75% improvement from the baseline composite (nominal composition of Ag 2 Se 1 ). In conclusion, the success of this study provides opportunities to generalize the demonstrated active machine learning technique to accelerate the development and optimization of a wide range of material systems with reduced experimental trials.

Biochemical approaches for synthesis of performance-advantaged polymers from lignocellulosic biomass

Lignocellulose is an abundant renewable feedstock for production of sustainable fuels, chemicals, and materials. The structural complexity of lignocellulose provides key material properties and inspires the design of advanced materials. However, this same complexity also presents challenges for conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into new materials with consistent properties. Conventional physical and chemical strategies for valorization of biomass to new materials are often limited by the technical challenges of precisely manipulating complex feedstocks, sensitivity to feedstock variability, and associated costs. In contrast, biological approaches are capable of selectively manipulating complex architectures under mild conditions. Recent advances demonstrate the potential of biological and hybrid biochemical methods to tailor biomass-derived polymers and generate new materials. This review provides an overview of biological strategies to valorize lignocellulosic biomass into novel materials, highlighting approaches for in planta engineering, biochemical modification of natural biomass polymers, microbial funneling of deconstructed biomass, and direct biosynthesis of novel polymers. In combination, these approaches open new avenues for the synthesis of performance-advantaged materials from lignocellulosic biomass.
