Effects of body shape on the aerodynamic characteristics of an all-body hypersonic aircraft configuration at Mach numbers from 0.65 to 10.6

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the effects of several variations in body shape on the aerodynamic characteristics of an all-body hypersonic aircraft configuration. The basic configuration had a delta planform with an elliptic cone forebody and an afterbody of elliptic cross section terminating in a straight-line trailing edge. Variations in body shape included the ratio of maximum cross-sectional to body planform area, body leading-edge sweep, and forebody length ratio. In addition, the effects of a thin wing mounted on one of the bodies was investigated, and the aerodynamic characteristics of just the forebodies of two of the configurations were determined. The models had no stabilizing surfaces or propulsion system packages. Ranges of angle of attack (-4 deg to +15 deg) and angle of sideslip (-4 deg to +8 deg) were investigated. Of the four complete bodies, the configuration with the lowest ratio of cross-sectional to body planform area had the highest maximum lift-drag ratio and the greatest level of longitudinal stability at most Mach numbers. All the configurations had positive longitudinal stability near maximum lift-drag ratio at most Mach numbers. With exception of the lowest subsonic Mach numbers, changes in body sweep angle and in forebody length ratio had only minor effects on maximum lift-drag ratio.

Automatic Exposure Iris Control (AEIC) for data acquisition camera

A lens design capable of operating over a total range of f/1.4 to f/11.0 with through the lens light sensing is presented along with a system which compensates for ASA film speeds as well as shutter openings. The space shuttle camera system package is designed so that it can be assembled on the existing 16 mm DAC with a minimum of alteration to the camera.

Coaxial isolator has versatile interface

Approach increases system-packaging flexibility. Isolators are constructed with removable connectors that can be changed to meet user's requirements. Technique reduces development scheduling problems. Isolators can be procured before package design is firm and then readily reconfigured to meet final design requirements. Changes to existing designs to incorporate removable connectors are minimal. Small adapter plates increase size modestly; weight increase is negligible.

Flight prototype CO2 and humidity control system

A regenerable CO2 and humidity control system is presently being developed for potential use on the space shuttle as an alternative to the baseline lithium hydroxide system. The system utilizes a sorbent material (designated HS-C) to adsorb CO2 and water vapor from the cabin atmosphere and desorb the CO2 and water vapor overboard when exposed to a space vacuum. Continuous operation is achieved by utilizing two beds which are alternately cycled between adsorption and desorption. A shuttle vehicle integration study showed that the HS-C system offers substantial weight advantages compared to the baseline shuttle orbiter expendable lithium hydroxide CO2 removal system for extended missions beyond the nominal design of four men for seven days. This study defined a system packaging envelope in the area presently occupied by the LiOH cartridges.

Mathematical specifications of the Onboard Navigation Package (ONPAC) simulator (revision 1)

The mathematical theory of the computational algorithms employed in the onboard navigation package system is described. This system, which simulates an onboard navigation processor, was developed to aid in the design and evaluation of onboard navigation software. The mathematical formulations presented include the factorized UDU(T) form of the extended Kalman filter, the equations of motion of the user satellite, the user clock equations, the observation equations and their partial derivatives, the coodinate transformations, and the matrix decomposition algorithms.

Intelligent robotic tracker

An intelligent tracker capable of robotic applications requiring guidance and control of platforms, robotic arms, and end effectors has been developed. This packaged system capable of supervised autonomous robotic functions is partitioned into a multiple processor/parallel processing configuration. The system currently interfaces to cameras but has the capability to also use three-dimensional inputs from scanning laser rangers. The inputs are fed into an image processing and tracking section where the camera inputs are conditioned for the multiple tracker algorithms. An executive section monitors the image processing and tracker outputs and performs all the control and decision processes. The present architecture of the system is presented with discussion of its evolutionary growth for space applications. An autonomous rendezvous demonstration of this system was performed last year. More realistic demonstrations in planning are discussed.

Packaging Of Control Circuits In A Robot Arm

Packaging system houses and connects control circuitry mounted on circuit boards within shoulder, upper section, and lower section of seven-degree-of-freedom robot arm. Has modular design that incorporates surface-mount technology, multilayer circuit boards, large-scale integrated circuits, and multi-layer flat cables between sections for compactness. Three sections of robot arm contain circuit modules in form of stardardized circuit boards. Each module contains two printed-circuit cards, one of each face.

Numerical aperture limits on efficient ball lens coupling of laser diodes to single-mode fibers with defocus to balance spherical aberration

The potential capabilities and limitations of single ball lenses for coupling laser diode radiation to single-mode optical fibers have been analyzed; parameters important to optical communications were specifically considered. These parameters included coupling efficiency, effective numerical apertures, lens radius, lens refractive index, wavelength, magnification in imaging the laser diode on the fiber, and defocus to counterbalance spherical aberration of the lens. Limiting numerical apertures in object and image space were determined under the constraint that the lens perform to the Rayleigh criterion of 0.25-wavelength (Strehl ratio = 0.80). The spherical aberration-defocus balance to provide an optical path difference of 0.25 wavelength units was shown to define a constant coupling efficiency (i.e., 0.56). The relative numerical aperture capabilities of the ball lens were determined for a set of wavelengths and associated fiber-core diameters of particular interest for single-mode fiber-optic communication. The results support general continuing efforts in the optical fiber communications industry to improve coupling links within such systems with emphasis on manufacturing simplicity, system packaging flexibility, relaxation of assembly alignment tolerances, cost reduction of opto-electronic components and long term reliability and stability.
