Landing Site and Traverse Plan Development for Resource Prospector

Resource Prospector (RP) will be the first lunar surface robotic expedition to explore the character and feasibility of in situ resource utilization at the lunar poles. It is aimed at determining where, and how much, hydrogen-bearing and other volatiles are sequestered in polar cold traps. To meet its goals, the mission should land where the likelihood of finding polar volatiles is high. The operational environment is challenging: very low sun elevations, long shadows cast by even moderate relief, cryogenic subsurface temperatures, unknown regolith properties, and very dynamic sun and Earth communications geometries force a unique approach to landing, traverse design and mission operations.

Monte Carlo Study of the Formation of Chromosome Aberrations by Direct Ion Traversal vs. Delta-Electrons

Space radiation constitutes a major risk for the safety of space travel. Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) are made of high energy protons (87%), high energy helium ions (12%) and high-charge and energy (HZE) ions [1]. At a cellular scale, HZE ions display a characteristic pattern of energy deposition, known as the ion track, that correlates with the ion linear energy transfer (LET). These energy deposition events (ionizations/excitations) create DNA breaks that, if misrepaired, lead to the formation of chromosome aberrations (CAs). Compared to low-LET terrestrial radiations (X-rays and γ-rays), high LET ions are known to create complex, clustered DNA breaks that are particularly efficient at forming CAs. Indeed, ion tracks are usually described as a dense ionization core, where clustered breaks are formed, and a penumbra, made of low-LET δ-electrons that have sufficient energy to travel across many cells and induce breaks that are more homogeneously distributed. In this work, we investigated the formation of CAs, and separated them into two contributions (direct ion traversal of the nucleus vs.δ-electrons), to elucidate to which extent δ-electrons contribute to CA formation.

Using Satellite Observations of Lightning and Precipitation to Diagnose the Behavior of Deep Convection in Tropical Cyclones Traversing the Midlatitudes

This study uses a unique combination of geostationary and low-Earth orbiting satellite-based lightning and precipitation observations, respectively, to examine the evolution of deep convection during the tropical cyclone (TC) lifecycle. The study spans the 2018-2021 Atlantic Basin hurricane seasons and is unique as it provides the first known analysis of total lightning (intra-cloud and cloud-to-ground) observed in TCs through their extratropical transition and post-tropical cyclone (PTC) phases. We consider the TC lifecycle stage, geographic location (e.g., land, coast, and ocean), shear strength, and quadrant relative to the storm motion and environmental shear vectors. Total lightning maxima are found in the forward right quadrant relative to storm motion and downshear of the TC center, consistent with previous studies using mainly cloud-to-ground lightning. Increasing environmental shear focuses the lightning maxima to the downshear right quadrant with respect to the shear vector in tropical storm phases. Vertical profiles of radar reflectivity from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission show that super electrically active convective precipitation features (>75 flashes) within the PTC phase of TCs have deeper mixed phase depths and higher reflectivity at -10°C than other phases, indicating the presence of more intense convection. Differences in the net convective behavior observed throughout TC evolution manifest in both the TC-scale frequency of lightning-producing cells and the intensity variations amongst individual convective cells. The combination of continuous lightning observations and precipitation snapshots improves our understanding of convective scale processes in TCs, especially in PTC phases, as they traverse the tropics and mid-latitudes.

Gravitational lensing effect in traversable wormholes

Highlights: • Strong gravitational lensing in the context of charged wormhole is studied. • The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of photon spheres at or outside the throat of the charged wormhole is derived. • Photon spheres are investigated in three cases for three different forms of redshift function. The present paper is intended for studying the effect of strong gravitational lensing in the context of charged wormhole. To study this effect, the conditions determining the existence of photon spheres at and outside the throat are obtained. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of photon spheres at or outside the throat of the charged wormhole is derived. Furthermore, photon spheres are investigated in three cases for three different forms of redshift function. These three cases include the existence of effective photon spheres (i) at the throat, (ii) outside the throat and (iii) both at and outside the throat. Consequently, these provide the information about the formation of infinite number of concentric rings and may lead to the detection of wormhole geometries.

Empowering a qudit-based quantum processor by traversing the dual bosonic ladder

Abstract High-dimensional quantum information processing has emerged as a promising avenue to transcend hardware limitations and advance the frontiers of quantum technologies. Harnessing the untapped potential of the so-called qudits necessitates the development of quantum protocols beyond the established qubit methodologies. Here, we present a robust, hardware-efficient, and scalable approach for operating multidimensional solid-state systems using Raman-assisted two-photon interactions. We then utilize them to construct extensible multi-qubit operations, realize highly entangled multidimensional states including atomic squeezed states and Schrödinger cat states, and implement programmable entanglement distribution along a qudit array. Our work illuminates the quantum electrodynamics of strongly driven multi-qudit systems and provides the experimental foundation for the future development of high-dimensional quantum applications such as quantum sensing and fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Trajectory of a flying plasma mirror traversing a target with density gradient

It has been proposed that laser-induced relativistic plasma mirror can accelerate if the plasma has a properly tailored density profile. Such accelerating plasma mirrors can serve as analog black holes to investigate Hawking evaporation and the associated information loss paradox. Here we reexamine the underlying dynamics of mirror motion in a graded-density plasma to provide an explicit trajectory as a function of the plasma density and its gradient. Specifically, a decreasing plasma density profile (down-ramp) along the direction of laser propagation would in general accelerate the mirror. In particular, a constant-plus-exponential density profile would generate the Davies–Fulling trajectory with a well-defined analog Hawking temperature, which is sensitive to the plasma density gradient but not to the density itself. Furthermore, we show that without invoking nano-fabricated thin-films, a much lower density gas target at, for example, ~1 × 10 17 cm -3 , would be able to induce an analog Hawking temperature, k B T H ~3.1 × 10 -2 eV, in the far-infrared region. We hope that this would help to better realize the experiment proposed by Chen and Mourou.

Traversable wormholes in four dimensions

Here, we present a wormhole solution in four dimensions. It is a solution of an Einstein Maxwell theory plus charged massless fermions. The fermions give rise to a negative Casimir-like energy, which makes the wormhole possible. It is a long wormhole that does not lead to causality violations in the ambient space. It can be viewed as a pair of entangled near extremal black holes with an interaction term generated by the exchange of fermion fields. The solution can be embedded in the Standard Model by making its overall size small compared to the electroweak scale.
