Optoelectronic Control Of Phased-Array Antenna

Radiation patterns switched within microseconds. According to concept, digital beam-steering information destined for number of phased antenna elements transmitted in serial multiplex along optical fiber to optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC), demultiplexing information into parallel electronic channels to phase shifters associated with various elements. Because of small distances between elements of such arrays, compactness of optical fibers makes them attractive for distribution of beam-steering (phase-shifting) control signals. Also offers advantages of light weight, low attenuation, mechanical flexibility, large bandwidth, and immunity to both crosstalk and electromagnetic interference.

GaAs-based optoelectronic neurons

An integrated, optoelectronic, variable thresholding neuron implemented monolithically in GaAs integrated circuit and exhibiting high differential optical gain and low power consumption is presented. Two alternative embodiments each comprise an LED monolithically integrated with a detector and two transistors. One of the transistors is responsive to a bias voltage applied to its gate for varying the threshold of the neuron. One embodiment is implemented as an LED monolithically integrated with a double heterojunction bipolar phototransistor (detector) and two metal semiconductor field effect transistors (MESFET's) on a single GaAs substrate and another embodiment is implemented as an LED monolithically integrated with three MESFET's (one of which is an optical FET detector) on a single GaAs substrate. The first noted embodiment exhibits a differential optical gain of 6 and an optical switching energy of 10 pJ. The second embodiment has a differential optical gain of 80 and an optical switching energy of 38 pJ. Power consumption is 2.4 and 1.8 mW, respectively. Input 'light' power needed to turn on the LED is 2 micro-W and 54 nW, respectively. In both embodiments the detector is in series with a biasing MESFET and saturates the other MESFET upon detecting light above a threshold level. The saturated MESFET turns on the LED. Voltage applied to the biasing MESFET gate controls the threshold.

Estimation of the absolute position of mobile systems by an optoelectronic processor

A method that determine the absolute position of a mobile system with a hybrid optoelectronic processor has been developed. Position estimates are based on an analysis of circular landmarks that are detected by a TV camera attached to the mobile system. The difference between the known shape of the landmark and its image provides the information needed to determine the absolute position of the mobile system. For robust operation, the parameters of the landmark image are extracted at high speeds using an optical processor that performs an optical Hough transform. The coordinates of the mobile system are computed from these parameters in a digital co-processor using fast algorithms. Different sources of position estimation errors have also been analyzed, and consequent algorithms to improve the navigation performance of the mobile system have been developed and evaluated by both computer simulation and experiments.

Optoelectronic Receiver For Communication And Control

Many operational and diagnostic features integrated into circuit chip. GaAs-based integrated circuit designed to serve as optoelectronic interface in phased-array antenna. Intended function to receive digital control signals transmitted on optical fiber and to convert signals to electronic control signals, which then applied to monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC). Also used in reception of high-rate optical digital communications within computers, between computers, and in signal-distribution systems in aircraft, automobiles, and ships. Interface circuit represents significant improvement over preexisting interface circuits in that its clock-signal-recovery subcircuit requires little or no preamble for immediate synchronization.

High-Resolution Optoelectronic Shaft-Angle Encoder

Improved optoelectronic encoder measures absolute angle to which shaft has been rotated. Costs little more than older, less capable encoders do, yet measures absolute angles at high resolution and does not lose absolute-angle data because generates those data anew with each reading at up to 1,000 times per second. It accumulates increments to measure total angular interval through which shaft has been turned (including unlimited number of complete turns), as long as power remains on.

Distributed Optoelectronic Proximity Sensor

Optoelectronic proximity sensor comprises seven identical units functioning together to provide partially redundant data on spatial relationship between sensor and nearby diffusely reflecting surface. Provides data on distance, relative orientation, and curvature of surface. Sensor called "Hexeye" because its units exhibit hexagonal symmetry when viewed along optical axes and mounted together in hexagonal close packing. Because all six arrays of photodetectors in unit measure essentially identical distributions of light in operating mode, each provides redundant information averaged to increase accuracy or used to verify operation of others. Malfunctioning photodector identified, and output ignored or replaced by interpolated value. Developed for use in such robotic applications as noncontact probing or scanning of surfaces, localization and recognition of objects, and guiding "smart" robot hands in grasping objects.

Phased-Array Antenna With Optoelectronic Control Circuits

Prototype phased-array antenna features control of amplitude and phase at each radiating element. Amplitude- and phase-control signals transmitted on optical fiber to optoelectronic interface circuit (OEIC), then to monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) at each element. Offers advantages of flexible, rapid electronic steering and shaping of beams. Furthermore, greater number of elements, less overall performance of antenna degraded by malfunction in single element.

Optoelectronic Particle-Fallout Sensor

Portable optoelectronic system monitors fallout of small particles (dust and fibers) onto surface at given location during extended time. Data on accumulated fallout downloaded from system to computer for display and analysis. Typical display is plot of signal proportional to amount of accumulated fallout as function of time and read to determine when contamination occurs. In many cases, possible to establish correlations between accumulations of particles and activities in vicinity. Also capable of signaling alarm in event contamination by fallout exceeds specified level. System made very inexpensively and used to monitor accumulation of dust and fibers associated with motion of air in variety of environments. Phenomena monitored indirectly by use of system might include circulation of air in buildings, and human and animal activity. Also serves as auxiliary intrusion monitor (though probably not real-time alarm) in sealed room because motion of intruder inevitably stirs up some dust.

High-Q Microsphere Cavity for Laser Stabilization and Optoelectronic Microwave Oscillator

With submillimeter size and optical Q up to approximately 10 (exp 10), microspheres with whispering-gallery (WG) modes are attractive new component for fiber-optics/photonics applications and a potential core in ultra-compact high-spectral-purity optical and microwave oscillators. In addition to earlier demonstrated optical locking of diode laser to WG mode in a microsphere, we report on microsphere application in the microwave optoelectronic oscillator, OEO. In OEO, a steady-state microwave modulation of optical carrier is obtained in a closed loop including electro-optical modulator, fiber-optic delay, detector and microwave amplifier. OEO demonstrates exceptionally low phase noise (-140 dBc/Hz at l0kHz from approximately 10GHz carrier) with a fiber length approximately 2km. Current technology allows to put all parts of the OEO, except the fiber, on the same chip. Microspheres, with their demonstrated Q equivalent to a kilometer fiber storage, can replace fiber delays in a truly integrated device. We have obtained microwave oscillation in microsphere-based OEO at 5 to 18 GHz, with 1310nm and 1550nm optical carrier, in two configurations: 1) with external DFB pump laser, and 2) with a ring laser including microsphere and a fiber optic amplifier. Also reported is a simple and efficient fiber coupler for microspheres facilitating their integration with existing fiber optics devices.
