G2Aero: A Python package for separable shape tensors

G2Aero is a Python package for the design and deformation of discrete planar curves and tubular surfaces using a geometric data-driven approach. G2Aero utilizes a topology of product manifolds: the Grassmannian, $\mathcal{G}$($\mathcal{n}$, 2) - the set of 2-dimensional subspaces in $\mathbb{R}$ $\mathcal{n}$ - and the symmetric positive-definite (SPD) manifold, $\mathcal{S}^{2}_{++}$ - the set of 2x2 SPD matrices. The package provides a novel framework for representing separable deformations to shapes, which consist of stretching, scaling, rotating, and translating - also known as affine deformations - and a set of complementary deformations - which we refer to as undulation-type deformations. We focus on airfoil and blade design applications to emphasize the utility of the methods in an environment where the separation of affine and undulation-type deformations is critical. Notable functionalities of the framework for blade design include: 1) generating novel 2D (airfoil) shapes informed by a database of physically relevant airfoils, 2) building 3D blades by interpolating sequences of 2D airfoil cross-sections, and 3) generating blades with consistent perturbations along the blade span. We discuss the framework and provide examples in the context of wind energy applications, specifically wind turbine blade design. Figure 1 shows the wire frame obtained by interpolating airfoils defining the IEA 15-MW wind turbine blade and applying affine transformations corresponding to twist, chordal scaling, and bending. This, and all other figures in the paper, can be reproduced following examples and referencing supporting documentation provided in the G2Aero package.

SmoQyDEAC.jl: A differential evolution package for the analytic continuation of imaginary time correlation functions

We introduce the SmoQyDEAC.jl package, a Julia implementation of the Differential Evolution Analytic Continuation (DEAC) algorithm [N. S. Nichols et al., Phys. Rev. E 106, 025312 (2022)] for analytically continuing noisy imaginary time correlation functions to the real frequency axis. Our implementation supports fermionic and bosonic correlation functions on either the imaginary time or Matsubara frequency axes, and treatment of the covariance error in the input data. This paper presents an overview of the DEAC algorithm and the features implemented in the SmoQyDEAC.jl package. It also provides detailed benchmarks of the package's output against the popular maximum entropy and stochastic analytic continuation methods.

Geochemical data package for performance assessment calculations related to the Savannah River Site

The Savannah River Site (SRS) disposes of low-level radioactive waste (LLW) and stabilizes high-level radioactive waste (HLW) tanks in the subsurface environment. Calculations used to establish the radiological limits of these facilities are referred to as Performance Assessments (PAs), Special Analyses (SAs), and Composite Analyses (CAs). The purpose of this document is to revise the existing geochemical data package used for these calculations (Kaplan, 2016). This work builds on earlier compilations of geochemical data, referred to a geochemical data packages (Kaplan, 2007; Kaplan, 2010; Kaplan, 2016; McDowell-Boyer et al., 2000). This work is being conducted as part of the on-going maintenance program of the SRS PA programs that periodically updates calculations and data packages when new information becomes available.

Comparing elemental measurements at packaging and after storage for signatures of chloride salt radiolysis

Radiolysis of hydrated alkaline earth chloride salts by alpha radiation from plutonium produces the chloride containing gases HCl and Cl 2 . These gases are known to diffuse out of the plutonium-containing material and contribute to corrosion outside of the convenience container. The alkaline earth elements remain with the plutonium-containing material as oxides or hydroxides. The amount of chlorine within the material after storage will be reduced compared to the amount at packaging. The fraction of the alkaline earth elements that are soluble after storage will be reduced compared to the amount at packaging. These signatures may be observable by comparing the chemical analysis measurements made at packaging and after storage. Comparison of measurements on a single Hanford container shows that the chloride does decrease and the alkaline earth elements have reduced solubility in water. Differences seen with other elements make conclusions difficult.

Rules of Use Report Engineering evaluations of nuclear material storage containers against the packaging requirements at TA-55

A set of obligations in the yearly storage container surveillance program, ensures that a retrospective approach is applied with loaded containers in inventory to confirm compliance with all “users” to ensure nuclear material storage container requirements are being followed. Validation that packaged containers are properly used, within a specific set of container types prescribed “bounding conditions of use,” is based on meeting requirements as identified in operating procedures associated with TA55-DOP-091, TA-55 Nuclear Material Packaging, and PA-RD-01022, Nuclear Material Packaging Requirements. The surveillance plan obligation requires the application of local area nuclear material accountability software or (LANMAS) to produce queries. The data queries are used to assess attributes of containers in storage these investigations are conducted on a bi-annual basis. This rules of use (ROU) compliance process ensures proper usage of storage containers as containment systems and therefore provides effective worker protection. It is structured as a supporting effort by implementing aspects of PA-AP-01207, Nuclear Material Container Safety Management at TA-55.

Benchmarking MELCOR's NAC Package to ABCOVE Test AB7

This report presents analyses of the AB7 ABCOVE sodium spray fire experiment with the MELCOR code. This code simulates the progression of accident events for analysis and auditing purposes of nuclear facilities during accident conditions. Historically, the ABCOVE experiments have contributed to the validation of aerosol physics and related phenomena. Given advancements in sodium-cooled reactor designs, characterization of the sodium spray combustion may further the review and validation of newly incorporated sodium properties and physics packages, namely, the sodium equations of state (EOS) and the sodium combustion (NAC) package within MELCOR. Previously, the AB5 and AB6 experiments were analyzed with and without the NAC package. This work builds on the previous analyses with a demonstration of the current code capabilities of MELCOR with a more mild Na spray and pool fire scenario.

Ion Traps and Packaging for Heterogenous Integration - Chimera

Microfabricated surface ion traps and silicon-based photonics are critical technologies for scaling quantum systems. Current ion trap architectures face scalability and integration challenges due to limitations in optical access, fabrication techniques, and material compatibility. State-of-the-art quantum computers and atomic clocks are investigating monolithic integration, which necessitates custom traps for each ion species and has not overcome the integration hurdles presented by merging these technologies. The Chimera (Ion Traps and Packaging for Heterogeneous Integration) project proposes a novel approach utilizing heterogeneous integration (HI) of ion traps and photonic circuits. This separation of components allows for flexibility in ion trap design and reduces fabrication compromises. The Chimera project specifically designed an ion trap to interface vertically with a separately fabricated waveguide chip and demonstrates the first steps to integrating them at the packaging level. The ion trap features a large area of removed silicon, allowing the photonics chip outputs closer to the ion trap, improving alignment and packaging processes. The alignment must be accurate to < 1 µm to ensure that the light from the waveguide can overlap with the trapping region. This fine alignment must also be maintained through an ultra-high vacuum bake, a critical step in preparing an ion trap experiment. By combining separate chips, we demonstrate a new path for scaling trapped ion technology that is less reliant on monolithic integration. We successfully fabricated a trap with a large area of oxide removed, resulting in a region thinned to about 40 µm, a key milestone toward successful integration.

Mechanical Loads on Spent Nuclear Fuel in the General 30 cm Package Drop Scenario

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) Spent Fuel and Waste Science & Technology (SFWST) research program is guided by the high-level goal of closing prioritized knowledge gaps related to spent nuclear fuel (SNF) storage and transportation, which are summarized by Saltzstein et al. (2020). One of the high-priority knowledge gaps is the identification and quantification of mechanical loads that are expected to affect SNF during normal conditions of transportation and storage to inform the range of physical SNF test programs. This report uses modeling and analysis methods to estimate the mechanical loads on spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in the general 30 cm package drop scenario. The drop scenario assumes impact limiters are in place in the transportation configuration and the impact surface is perfectly rigid. The goal of this analysis is to consider the universe of potential mechanical loading conditions that can happen to SNF and present the results in a manner that is useful for materials testing, decision making, and regulatory rule making purposes. This study uses validated finite element models and methods to perform a broad parametric study of key variables that can affect the mechanical loads on SNF during a hypothetical package free drop scenario. Physical drop test data from a cask and fuel assembly drop test campaign is the basis for model validation. Additionally, the results of the parametric study are used to inform a damage model, which uses multiple nonlinear regression to estimate the relationships between input variables and output response. The parametric finite element analyses consider thousands of input variable combinations, while the damage model estimates millions of combinations. The breadth of this study provides confidence that the potential range of mechanical loads that SNF might experience during the general 30 cm package drop scenario are characterized well enough to consider this knowledge gap closed. While this report documents the overall peak values calculated in this study, the 95 th percentile values, the histograms, and the observed trends are equally important. This study covered a large range of SNF temperatures, room temperature to 300°C, and burnups, 10 GWd/MTU to 62 GWd/MTU. Each temperature and burnup combination has a different cladding yield strain, so it is more meaningful to summarize the calculated cladding strain response as its factor of safety, which is defined relative to the yield strain. The factor of safety is calculated as the yield strain divided by the peak cladding strain. A factor of safety greater than unity indicates that the cladding remains below yield, whereas a value less than unity is indicative of plastic deformation. In all cases of this study a safety factor over 1.0 was calculated, although in the most limiting case at 300°C the safety factor was only 1.01, which suggests that yielding could occur when additional loads like rod internal pressure are included. When the temperature is restricted to 200°C the limiting safety factor increases to 1.28, which has significant margin to accommodate internal pressure and potential local cladding defects that could cause a local stress concentration. An important trend in the calculated fuel rod mechanical loads is that the 2 nd highest loaded fuel rod in an assembly tends to be significantly lower than the highest loaded rod. The implication is that even if one rod in an assembly experiences a failure the loads would have to be significantly higher to cause two or more rods to fail.

Novel multi-channel skipper-CCD packages for dark matter searches

The next generation of skipper Charge Coupled Device (skipper-CCD) experiments for rare-event searches will bring new challenges for the packaging and read-out of the detectors. Scaling the active mass and simultaneously reducing the experimental backgrounds in two orders of magnitude will require a novel high-density Silicon-based package, that must be massively produced and stored. In this work, we present the design, first production, and testing of multi-channel Silicon packages with photon shielding, along with the outlook for the next steps toward producing 1500 wafers that will add up to a 10 kg skipper-CCD detector.

Energy Efficiency Package for Tenant Fit-Out: Laboratory Testing and Validation of Energy Savings and Indoor Environmental Quality

Approximately 40% of the total U.S. office floor space of 1.5 billion sq.m (16 billion sq.ft.) is leased space occupied by tenants. Tenant fit-out presents a key opportunity to incorporate energy efficiency within the real estate business cycle. We designed a package of energy efficiency measures tailored to the scope of a tenant fit-out. This tenant fit-out package (TFP) includes advanced lighting and heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) controls as core measures, with ceiling fans, automated shading, and plug load controls as additional optional measures. We conducted laboratory testing of six configurations of the package to evaluate energy savings, indoor environmental quality, and identify installation, commissioning, and operational issues. Combined savings for HVAC, lighting, and plug loads ranged from 33–40%. Lighting savings ranged from 69–83%, and HVAC savings from 20–40%. The laboratory testing also revealed some minor but tractable challenges with installation and commissioning of HVAC controls. Overall, the results demonstrate that significant savings can be realized in existing office buildings by incorporating relatively low-risk, proven measures at the time of a tenant fit-out.
