Gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission line for radio frequency signal generation and pulse compression

Disclosed are non-linear transmission lines using ferromagnetic materials to generate ferromagnetic resonance oscillations. In one aspect, a non-linear transmission line apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes an outer conductor having a first side and a second internally facing side, and an inner conductor positioned internal to the non-linear transmission line apparatus. The apparatus further includes a ferromagnetic material surrounding the inner conductor, wherein the ferromagnetic material comprises nanoparticles of an ε-polymorph of iron oxide expressed as ε-Fe2O3. The apparatus also includes a first dielectric material positioned between the outer conductor and the inner conductor, the dielectric material in contact with both the ferromagnetic material and with the second internally facing side of the outer conductor, wherein the outer conductor, the inner conductor, the dielectric material and the ferromagnetic material form the nonlinear transmission line.

Magnetically Arrested Circumbinary Accretion Flows

Abstract Binary systems with comparable masses and a surrounding accretion disk can accrete gas through spiral accretion streams penetrating the central cavity formed by tidal interactions. Using three-dimensional Newtonian magnetohydrodynamics simulations, we investigate the possibility of a magnetically arrested accretion flow through the cavity. Rather than solely continuously feeding the binary through spiral accretion streams, the accretion is regulated by the strong magnetic field inside the cavity. Transport of mass and angular momentum onto the binary then proceeds largely periodically in magnetic flux eruption episodes. The ejected flux tubes carry angular momentum outward and away from the binary, inject hot plasma into the disk, and can launch flares. This likely intermittent scenario could have potential implications for the emission signatures of supermassive black hole binaries and shed light onto the role magnetic fields play in the binary’s orbital evolution.

Improved nylon polymerization using amide diads

Nylons, a major class of synthetic polyamides, are widely used due to their excellent mechanical strength, thermal stability, and chemical resistance. Conventional nylon production relies on the polymerization of lactams or stoichiometric nylon salts. However, applying these approaches to unconventional precursors such as bio-derived glutaric acid produces polymers with low molecular weight and limited applications. To address these challenges, we demonstrated that chemically-synthesized nylon diads enable the production of higher-molecular-weight polyamides compared with traditional salts. We then identified a biosynthetic approach using amide synthetases to convert unprotected bifunctional substrates into nylon-relevant diads. Using a cofactor regeneration system, enzymatic diad synthesis was scaled to produce sufficient material for laboratory-scale characterization and solid-state polymerization. Amide synthetases demonstrated broad substrate scope, catalyzing the regioselective assembly of diverse nylon-relevant diacids, diamines, and ω-amino acids. This strategy offers a novel route to synthesize challenging nylon monomers and advances production of bioderived nylons.

Polymer connectivity governs electrophotocatalytic activity in the solid state

The reductive functionalization of inert substrates such as chloroarenes is a critical yet challenging transformation relevant to both environmental remediation and organic synthesis. Combining electricity and light is an emerging strategy to access the deeply reducing potentials required for single electron transfer to chloroarenes, yet this approach is limited by poor stability and mechanistic ambiguity. Here, in this work, we demonstrate heterogeneous electrophotocatalysis using redox-active rylene diimide polymers for the reduction of chloroarenes. We find that the electrophotocatalytic activity varies dramatically as a function of the rylene diimide and the redox-inactive polymer backbone. In particular, a flexible, non-conjugated perylenediimide polymer outperforms all other tested electrophotocatalysts. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals that precomplexation between the doubly reduced perylenediimide and the haloarene substrate is key to productive catalysis. Overall, this work highlights heterogeneous electrophotocatalysis using insoluble redox-active organic materials and provides critical structure–property insights into solid-state electrophotocatalytic activity, informing the development of next-generation materials for sustainable synthesis.

TRACE Input Modernization

This work presents a Tom’s Obvious Minimal Language (TOML)-based representation of input for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s TRAC/RELAP Advanced Computational Engine (TRACE) thermal hydraulics code. Implemented using the Workbench Analysis Sequence Processor (WASP), the approach maps traditional TRACE input structures to a hierarchical format composed of named parameters, typed values, and native data collections. The resulting representation preserves TRACE’s existing modeling capabilities while providing a modern, structured interface for model development and management. WASP further extends TOML through a file import directive that supports modular model composition and reusable input organization. In addition, WASP provides extended array data entry convenience with various data repeat and interpolation capabilities. Examples of the new TOML syntax are provided for major TRACE input categories, including hydraulic components, heat structures, control systems, and trip logic. The TOML representation establishes a foundation for improved validation, tooling, automation, and model maintainability while remaining compatible with existing TRACE workflows. To facilitate migration to the TOML-based input format, the TRACE executable now supports conversion of native TRACE input into an intermediate JSON representation. A Python utility subsequently transforms the JSON data into an equivalent TOML model. Lastly, the TRACE executable now supports execution using TOML-formatted input.

Henry’s Solubility and Diffusion Coefficients for 29 Volatile Organic Compounds in Polydimethylsiloxane Sylgard 184 at 293 K

Two-dimensional (2D) inverse gas chromatography (IGC) enables simultaneous determination of Henry’s solubility and Fickian diffusion coefficients for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in polymer films. This technique offers a significant advantage over traditional cylindrical column IGC by providing precise control and measurement of the film thickness (here, 0.064 ± 0.002 mm), which is the critical length scale for accurate diffusivity determination. We apply this methodology to characterize VOC transport in Sylgard 184, a widely used polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based polymer containing substantial silica filler content. At room temperature (20 °C), we measured solubility and diffusion coefficients for 29 common VOCs spanning diverse chemical functionalities, including alkanes, aromatics, chlorinated solvents, ketones, esters, and alcohols. Comparison with literature data for pure PDMS reveals that VOC solubility in Sylgard 184 is generally higher; for most non-hydrogen-bonding compounds it remains within a factor of 2 of pure PDMS, whereas alcohols are enhanced by roughly 1.8 to 3.7 times, which we attribute to favorable interactions with residual silanol groups on the silanized silica filler. Diffusion coefficients range from 1.0 × 10 –6 cm 2 /s (n-undecane) to 8.9 × 10–5 cm 2 /s (acetonitrile) and align well with extrapolated literature values for PDMS. This study provides essential thermodynamic and transport data for predicting VOC permeation in Sylgard 184 while demonstrating the utility of 2D IGC as a robust technique for characterizing rubbery polymer membranes across diverse industrial applications.

Deep Learning and Photogrammetric Reconstruction for Automated Crack Detection and Dimensional Measurement in Mining Operations

Surface crack detection and dimensional measurement at active mining sites present significant safety and operational challenges. Manual inspection methods are labor-intensive, spatially incomplete, and expose personnel to hazardous environments, while existing automated approaches have been developed primarily for concrete civil infrastructure and have not been validated on the complex, variable surfaces characteristic of mining environments. This dissertation presents an automated pipeline that integrates deep learning semantic segmentation with Structure-from-Motion photogrammetry to detect surface cracks and measure their aperture, length, and vertical displacement from standard RGB imagery acquired during routine Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) survey operations, without requiring additional sensor hardware or manual measurement. The pipeline combines a U-Net architecture with an EfficientNet-B0 encoder, pretrained on the SDNET2018 concrete crack dataset and fine-tuned on a mining-specific dataset spanning laboratory concrete specimens, coal refuse impoundment embankments, and post-blast limestone quarry benches. Photogrammetric reconstruction is performed using COLMAP Structure-from-Motion and Multi-View Stereo, with crack segmentation masks projected into the reconstructed point cloud to enable three-dimensional vertical displacement measurement through local plane fitting and bimodal surface detection. The pipeline was validated across 36 controlled laboratory specimens at three imaging distances and four vertical displacement levels, achieving aperture measurement RMSE of 0.047 cm and R² of 0.954, and vertical displacement RMSE of 0.140 cm and R² of 0.966, against independent caliper measurements. Field application at a coal refuse impoundment in southwestern Pennsylvania detected 71 crack components across the embankment crest, with a dominant longitudinal crack exhibiting aperture values reaching 28 cm and a 95th percentile vertical displacement of 35.53 cm, consistent in magnitude and spatial distribution with simultaneously acquired LiDAR-derived estimates. Application across four post-blast limestone quarry bench datasets in California successfully characterized blast-induced fracture networks at ground sampling distances ranging from 0.59 to 1.23 cm/pixel, with detected crack geometries physically consistent with observable surface conditions at each site. The results demonstrate that deep learning-based crack detection and photogrammetric measurement can be integrated into routine UAV inspection workflows at mining sites, providing repeatable, scalable, and quantitative crack characterization across surface types, crack scales, and displacement magnitudes not previously addressed in the literature. The pipeline requires no dedicated surveying equipment beyond the UAV platforms already deployed at mine sites for survey and monitoring purposes, supporting practical adoption within existing operational workflows.

A fully light-driven approach to separate carbon dioxide from emission streams

Carbon capture from industrial point sources is an essential component of the global effort to mitigate climate risks. However, traditional approaches require significant energy input—often provided, counterproductively, by fossil fuel combustion. Using sunlight directly as the energy source would significantly improve the energy efficiency of carbon capture processes. Herein, we report the first fully visible-light-driven CO 2 separation system, in which carbon capture is achieved via the photoenolization/addition reaction of inexpensive 2-methylbenzophenone with CO 2 , and CO 2 release is realized through an intramolecular photodecarboxylation reaction. Finally, this system operates isothermally, works with natural sunlight, and facilitates CO 2 removal from natural gas flue emissions, providing a blueprint for other non-thermal chemical separations.

Estradiol associations with brain functional connectivity in postmenopausal women

Abstract Objective Previous studies have found that estrogens play a role in functional connectivity in the brain; however, little research has been done regarding how estradiol is associated with functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between estradiol and functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. Methods Structural and blood oxygenation level–dependent resting-state magnetic resonance imaging scans of 88 cognitively healthy postmenopausal individuals were obtained along with blood samples collected the same day as the magnetic resonance imaging to assess hormone levels. We generated connectivity values in CONN toolbox version 20.b, an SPM-based software. Results A regression analysis was run using estradiol level and regions of interest (ROI), including the hippocampus, parahippocampus, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and precuneus. Estradiol level was found to enhance parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left functional connectivity during ROI-to-ROI regression analysis. Estradiol enhanced functional connectivity between the parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left and the precuneus as well as the parahippocampal gyrus anterior division left and parahippocampal gyrus posterior division right. An exploratory analysis showed that years since the final menstrual period was related to enhanced connectivity between regions within the frontoparietal network. Conclusions These results illustrated the relationship between estradiol level and functional connectivity in postmenopausal women. They have implications for understanding how the functioning of the brain changes for individuals after menopause that may eventually lead to changes in cognition and behavior in older ages.

Fine-Grained Power and Energy Attribution on AMD GPU/APU-Based Exascale Nodes

Modern exascale GPU- and APU-based systems provide multiple power and energy sensors, but differences in scope, update rate, timing, and filtering complicate the attribution of short-lived accelerator activity. This paper presents a methodology to characterize and correct these effects on Cray EX systems with AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs (Frontier) and MI300A APUs (Portage). Using controlled square-wave workloads, we quantify update intervals, delay, aliasing, and variability across up to 512 GPUs and 480 APUs with on-chip (rocm-smi/amd-smi) and off-chip Cray Power Management sensors. We reconstruct power from cumulative energy counters to achieve faster response times, validate it against on-chip, off-chip, and node-level sensors, and integrate the resulting streams into a Score-P/PAPI-based tool for time-aligned, phase-level attribution. Applied to rocHPL, rocHPL-MxP, and HPG-MxP, the method separates energy savings due to reduced runtime from changes in power. Mixed precision reduces node energy on Frontier by 79% for rocHPL-MxP and 31% for HPG-MxP, with similar trends on Portage. These results provide portable guidance for sensor validation and power-aware optimization on current and future exascale systems.

Acquisitive root exploration strategies help maintain higher peak sap flux rates during summer drought, but more root biomass does not

Roots are responsible for soil water uptake, yet little is known about how variation in fine-root traits relates to whole-tree water movement, particularly during periods of drought. By combining a 3-yr dataset monitoring sap flow rates with measures of fine-root biomass, length, and morphology across 10 tree species, we addressed hypotheses concerning the role of fine-root system size and morphology in determining tree responses to summer drought as well as potential changes in their relative importance under more severe droughts. Greater fine-root biomass and length did not enable trees to maintain high rates of sap flow during drought, whereas the morphological traits, specific root length and specific root area, were linked to sustained sap flow rates during drought. We found that all species, irrespective of root traits, progressively reduced their sap flow under more extreme drought conditions, although more acquisitive root morphology was still associated with smaller reductions. Our results run counter to long-standing assumptions that larger root systems are better able to access soil water and maintain photosynthetic activity during drought. Instead, we find evidence that root morphology at least partially determines the capacity for water uptake and movement as soil moisture declines.

Mechanically and Thermally Robust Gel Electrolytes Built from A Charged Double Helical Polymer

Polymer electrolytes have received tremendous interest in the development of solid-state batteries, but often fall short in one or more key properties required for practical applications. Herein, a rigid gel polymer electrolyte prepared by immobilizing a liquid mixture of a lithium salt and poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether with only 8 wt% poly(2,2′-disulfonyl-4,4′-benzidine terephthalamide) (PBDT) is reported. The high charge density and rigid double helical structure of PBDT lead to formation of a nanofibrillar structure that endows this electrolyte with stronger mechanical properties, wider temperature window, and higher battery rate capability compared to all other poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes. The ion transport mechanism in this rigid polymer electrolyte is systematically studied using multiple complementary techniques. Li/LiFePO 4 cells show excellent capacity retention over long-term cycling, with thermal cycling reversibility between ambient temperature and elevated temperatures, demonstrating compelling potential for solid-state batteries targeting fast charging at high temperatures and slower discharging at ambient temperature.

Multiple shape coexistence near {sup 118}Sn: First 0+ 3 lifetime measurement

The intruder bands in Sn isotopes, built on the 2p-2h excitation across the Z = 50 proton shell gap, are well-known examples of shape coexistence near the neutron mid-shell region. Spectroscopic signatures for shape coexistence include enhanced E0 transitions between the 0+ band heads. However, the underlying shape coexistence and mixing has been unclear because lifetime information for the excited 0+ states was incomplete in 118Sn. We thus present here the first measurement of the 0+ 3 lifetime in 118Sn using the fast-timing technique following thermal-neutron capture. The observed enhancement in ρ2(E0;0+ 3 → 0+ 2 ) of 150(30) milliunits provides compelling indications for multiple shape coexistence in 118Sn. Additionally, three distinct shapes in 116,118,120Sn naturally emerged in theoretical calculations based on the quantum-number-projected generator coordinate method employing a relativistic energy density functional.

Single-crystal NMC622 from combustion-assisted solid-state synthesis: Tunable particle size, voltage-dependent stability, and Li-ion diffusion

Cost-effective and scalable synthesis of single-crystal lithium–metal-oxide cathodes with controlled size and morphology remains challenging for advancing high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Here, we demonstrate a solution combustion–assisted solid-state method for producing single-crystal NMC622 with tunable particle size at various lithium stoichiometries. Structural and electronic characteristics were probed using synchrotron-XANES, EXAFS, XRD and XPS, confirming well-defined coordination environments and phase purity up to Li ≈ 1.3. The electrochemical behavior of LixNMC (x = 1.0 and 1.3) single crystals was evaluated across 2.8–4.3 V and 2.8–4.7 V windows to elucidate the effects of lithium content and operating voltage. At 2.8–4.3V, Li1.3NMC exhibits higher initial capacity due to its larger lithium inventory, while Li1.0NMC shows superior long-term retention driven by its larger crystal size and reduced structural distortion. Increasing the cutoff voltage to 4.7 V enhances the initial capacity of both compositions by 17–25%, but long-term capacity retention ultimately converges to values comparable to those at 4.3 V due to voltage-induced degradation, where Li+ diffusion constant remains lying ranging from 10−12 –10−11 cm2s−1. Overall, this study establishes a scalable combustion-assisted route for synthesizing tunable single-crystal NMC622 and highlights the interplay between lithium stoichiometry, particle size, and voltage window in governing cathode stability.
