Printed Circuit Board Inspection and Quality Control - PCB Failure Causes and Cures

This two day workshop will discuss a range of topics, including root cause analysis, physics-of-failure principles and failure mechanisms in printed circuit boards. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the baseline for electronics manufacturing upon which electronic components are mounted and formed into electronic systems. PCBs are used in a variety of electronic circuits from simple one-transistor amplifiers to large super computers. A PCB serves three main functions: 1) it provides the necessary mechanical support for the components in the circuit 2) it provides the necessary electrical interconnections, and 3) it bears some form of legend which identifies the components it carries. The failure modes on the PCBs can be categorized in a hierarchical structure, in which the mechanisms and causes are site or location dependant. Specimen preparation techniques, non-destructive and destructive analysis, and materials characterization will also be discussed. The first day of the workshop will present methodologies for identifying potential failure mechanisms in electronics based on the failure history and, systematic approaches to root cause analysis. The second day will cover failure analysis techniques geared towards various failure mechanisms, along with numerous component and PCB assembly failure analysis case studies that illustrate the techniques and analysis. Failure analysis case studies will be used to illustrate the techniques and analysis principles to arrive at the root cause(s) of field failures on printed circuit boards, active components, and assemblies.

Stripline/Microstrip Transition in Multilayer Circuit Board

A stripline-to-microstrip transition has been incorporated into a multilayer circuit board that supports a distributed solid-state microwave power amplifier, for the purpose of coupling the microwave signal from a buried-layer stripline to a top-layer microstrip. The design of the transition could be adapted to multilayer circuit boards in such products as cellular telephones (for connecting between circuit-board signal lines and antennas), transmitters for Earth/satellite communication systems, and computer mother boards (if processor speeds increase into the range of tens of gigahertz). The transition is designed to satisfy the following requirements in addition to the basic coupling requirement described above: (1) The transition must traverse multiple layers, including intermediate layers that contain DC circuitry. (2) The transition must work at a frequency of 32 GHz with low loss and low reflection. (3) The power delivered by the transition to top-layer microstrip must be split equally in opposite directions along the microstrip. Referring to the figure, this amounts to a requirement that when power is supplied to input port 1, equal amounts of power flow through output ports 2 and 3. (4) The signal-line via that is necessarily a part of such a transition must not be what is known in the art as a blind via; that is, it must span the entire thickness of the circuit board.

Building Reliable Printed Circuit Boards - the Lessons Learned

"Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are the baseline for electronics manufacturing upon which electronic components are mounted and formed into electronic systems. This one day workshop will discuss a variety of failure mechanisms that effect the functionality of PCBs. These mechanisms can be related to how PCB materials are selected, PCBs are designed, manufactured, tested and used in the field conditions. The workshop will begin with an overview of PCB manufacturing, materials and processes. With the help of examples and case studies, a wide range of failure mechanisms will be discussed, case studies are focused on digital circuits, however some failures in analog, double sided boards are also presented. The workshop then provides the guideline for selection of methodologies for identifying potential failure mechanisms based on the failure history and how a systematic root cause failure analysis of the PCB can result in prevention of future issues."

Measured Energy-Dependent Neutron Attenuation Through the Stacked Printed Circuit Boards

Engineers often stack printed circuit boards (PCBs), populated with semiconductor devices, one behind the other in neutron beams to improve the error statistics in radiation-effects tests. As the neutron beam traverses through the boards, the neutron flux is both attenuated and the energy spectrum changes, which may have a significant impact on the results of such tests. In this work, we have developed a technique to measure the energy-dependent neutron attenuation due to the PCBs and to determine the energy-dependent effective cross section of neutron interactions with a single PCB. With this effective cross section, engineers can calculate the change in the neutron energy spectrum and the total neutron attenuation after any number of identical PCBs in the stack. This information will allow test engineers to partially correct inaccuracies in soft error tests.

Circuit board and method of forming same

A circuit board comprising a substrate and a circuit trace. The substrate includes a surface etched via ion milling over a circuit area such that the surface has an increased roughness. The circuit trace forms portions of an electronic circuit and may be created from a thin conductive film deposited on the surface within the circuit area. The circuit trace adheres more strongly to the roughened substrate surface, which prevents the circuit trace from peeling or becoming delaminated from the substrate surface.

A Formal Algorithm for Routing Traces on a Printed Circuit Board

This paper addresses the classical problem of printed circuit board routing: that is, the problem of automatic routing by a computer other than by brute force that causes the execution time to grow exponentially as a function of the complexity. Most of the present solutions are either inexpensive but not efficient and fast, or efficient and fast but very costly. Many solutions are proprietary, so not much is written or known about the actual algorithms upon which these solutions are based. This paper presents a formal algorithm for routing traces on a print- ed circuit board. The solution presented is very fast and efficient and for the first time speaks to the question eloquently by way of symbolic statements.

Recycling of Printed Circuit Boards to Recover Critical Materials

The printed circuit board (PCB), a central component of most electronic devices, represents a significant fraction of the electronic product waste stream. The complex composition of PCBs, consisting of metals, polymers, and fiberglass, requires specialized recovery steps to reclaim valuable and critical materials and the safe disposal of brominated compounds. In this review paper, we describe the current state of critical material recovery and traditional recycling technologies and identify key obstacles to large-scale implementation. Metals present at high concentrations, such as copper, lead, and iron, are conventionally recovered from PCBs using hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, or electrometallurgical processes. Hydrometallurgical methods achieve high selectivity through chemical leaching but pose significant challenges for effluent and reagent recovery. Pyrometallurgical methods facilitate rapid metal separation through smelting but require substantial energy and may release harmful gases. Electrometallurgical techniques produce high-purity metals but are constrained by pretreatment requirements and the consumption of energy. The non-metallic fraction of PCB waste is recycled using thermochemical conversion, microwave-aided heating, and direct recycling of epoxy–fiberglass composites, enabling material or energy recovery. The recovered polymer from direct recycling may have reduced mechanical strength and poor compatibility with new polymer matrices, and the resulting products from the thermal conversion suffer from incomplete conversion, degradation of quality, and residual contamination, as compared to synthetic polymers. Recent process developments have focused on extracting rare earth and supply-critical materials present at lower concentrations in the waste stream. The literature on existing and emerging approaches for recycling PCB wastes is reviewed to identify sustainable, economically viable, and environmentally responsible strategies for the recovery and reuse of critical materials from waste streams.

Epoxy / Silicone Potting Material Removal for Greater Recovery of Circuit Boards

This report documents an exploratory research project, “Epoxy/Silicone Potting Material Removal for Greater Recovery of Circuit Boards,” that investigated micro abrasion and laser ablation as potential cost effective methods for removal of epoxy and silicone potting material from printed circuit boards (PCBs) to expose components for testing and repair. The ability to cost effectively remove such PCB potting materials will improve PCB repair, remanufacture, and reuse opportunities with potential for sizable reductions in material use, E-waste, and energy. Laser ablation was identified as a method potentially warranting further investigation, in particular for epoxy based potting materials.
