Current Observer Based Predictive Decoupled Power Control Grid-Interactive Inverter

This paper presents a sensor-less current model predictive control (MPC) scheme via a full state observer based current estimator. The grid interactive inverters’ control schemes require current and voltage sensors. Elimination of current sensor enhances the inverter reliability. This paper leverages the inherent characteristics of MPC towards robust current sensor-less grid interactive inverter with LC filter. The observer for inductor current is developed based on the existing capacitor voltage measurement. The estimator dynamic state-space matrices are then obtained through reconstruction of the inverter model with the capacitor voltage and inductor current being the state variables. The controller objectives are to regulate active and reactive power in a decoupled manner. The theoretical expectation, controller performance, and accuracy of the current estimation are verified by conducting a real-time simulation via Typhoon HIL.

Transient Stability Analysis of Direct Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverter with Current Clipping as Current Limiting Control

This paper investigates the transient stability of the direct droop-controlled grid-forming (GFM) inverter which employs the current clipping-based approach for overcurrent limitation. An equivalent circuit model of the direct-droop GFM inverter with current clipping is developed for this purpose. It is shown that during overcurrent conditions, the GFM inverter with current clipping acts as a voltage source with a virtual resistance behind the inverter filters. To compute the parameters of this virtual resistance an analytical expression is given in the paper. Then utilizing the developed circuit, a criteria to exit current limiting during post-fault conditions is given. The developed analytical approaches are then validated through electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation results in PSCAD software and finally concluding remarks are drawn.

Grid-forming control is regarded as a promising technology for achieving high levels of renewable energy integration in future power grids. To fulfill this role, grid-forming devices is expected to possess fault ride through capability. This paper focuses on the transient stability of a droop control-based grid-forming inverter that utilizes current reference saturation as a current limiting strategy. The objective of this work is to investigate the fault recovery process of the grid-forming inverter and analyze the criterion for transitioning the inverter out of the current limiting mode. The theoretical analysis in this study is validated through time-domain simulations, which compare the results obtained using the circuit current limiting method and the d-axis priority-based current limiting method. Various operational conditions are considered to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the grid-forming inverter during a three-phase short circuit scenario. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed theoretical approach.

A Current Limiting Control Strategy for Single-Loop Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters Under Balanced and Unbalanced Faults

Existing studies reporting current limiting control strategies for grid-forming inverters primarily focus on grid-forming inverters that use a multi-loop control structure. This study reports a current limiting control for grid-forming inverters that uses a single-loop control structure. The proposed current limiting control was implemented at the pulse width modulation (PWM) control layer to guarantee a rapid response. Once an overcurrent caused by severe faults is detected, the proposed control strategy immediately blocks relevant insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) using a hysteresis loop, ensuring that the overcurrent is limited within a few PWM cycles. After the fault is cleared, the inverter seamlessly transfers back to droop control mode to maintain stability. The current limiting control has been tested in a microgrid environment operating in the OPAL-RT platform. Study results show that the control strategy can effectively limit the overcurrent under both balanced and unbalanced faults and can maintain system transient stability after the fault is cleared.

Positive-Sequence Phasor Modeling of Droop-Controlled, Grid-Forming Inverters with Fault Current Limiting Function

Traditional positive-sequence phasor models of droop-controlled, grid-forming inverters do not have the fault current limiting function. During a short-circuit fault the model generates unrealistic high fault current making the simulation results less practical. This paper develops a fault current limiting function for the positive-sequence phasor model of droop-controlled, grid-forming inverters, which can effectively limit the inverter output current at the predefined maximum during faults. A user-written model has been developed for the commercially-available software Siemens/PTI PSS/E. Fault studies on a modified IEEE 39-bus system with all grid-forming inverters verify the effectiveness of the developed fault current limiting function. The proposed model can be used to evaluate how the limited fault currents of droop-controlled, grid-forming inverters impact the bulk power system transient stability under fault conditions.

Adaptive Internal Model Based Current Control with Embedded Active Damping of a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Inverter with LCL Filter for PV Application

This paper presents an internal model based controller with embedded active damping for a three-phase grid-connected inverter with LCL filter. A strategy to control the grid current based on the internal model principle is presented in this paper. It is known that a third-order LCL filter apart from providing better attenuation also poses the problem of initiating unwanted resonance oscillations especially during transients. To address this problem, an active damping strategy based on virtual resistance emulation on the grid side filter is implemented. Also, to ensure effective active damping, an online parameter update strategy is implemented for the filter parameters. The proposed method provides better attenuation to oscillation damping and achieves good tracking performance without adversely affecting the bandwidth. The architecture is verified based on computer simulations via MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS domain and various important case study results are presented.

A Two-Stage Current Limiting Control Strategy for Direct-Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters

This paper presents a two-stage current limiting control strategy with fault ride-through capability for the direct-droop-controlled grid-forming (GFM) inverters. The proposed approach comprises Stage 1 and Stage 2 current limiting controls. During faults, Stage 1 current limiting control instantly clamps the inverter output current magnitude to its maximum transient limit by blocking the switching pulses to the insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) with the help of a hysteresis loop control, and Stage 2 current limiting control limits the inverter output current magnitude to its steady-state limit by regulating the amplitude and frequency of the modulating waveform utilizing the active and reactive current limiting control loops. By implementing the current limiting actions in two stages, this approach can effectively limit the over-current within a few cycles after the fault occurrence and ensure synchronism to the grid after long-term fault events. The efficacy of the proposed control approach is validated through electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation results conducted on a single GFM inverter-based test system and the IEEE 39-bus test system with multiple GFM inverters in the PSCAD platform.

Duty-Cycle Predictive Control of Quasi-Z-Source Modular Cascaded Converter Based Photovoltaic Power System

A duty-cycle predictive control is proposed for dc grid integration of front-end isolated quasi-Z-source modular cascaded converter (qZS-MCC) photovoltaic (PV) power system. The post-stage qZS half-bridge dc-dc converter deals with PV maximum power point tracking, dc grid integration, and dc-link voltage balance; whereas, the front-end isolation converters operate at a constant duty cycle of 50%. Thus, it saves control hardware resources while overcoming challenges from PV-panel voltage variations and dc-bus voltage limit. The proposed control uses the derived circuit model to predict the global active-state duty cycle for grid-connected current control and predict the shoot-through duty cycles for dc-link voltage balance, achieving a fast and accurate tracking target. The proposed control method has advantages of: i) eliminating weighting factors that exist in conventional model predictive control (MPC), ii) no sophisticated loop parameters design that exists in proportional-integral (PI) control, iii) operating at constant switching frequency that is different from the conventional MPC with variable switching frequency. Simulation and experimental tests are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method and compare with the PI-based control system.

Novel Hybrid Current Limiter for Grid-Forming Inverter Control During Unbalanced Faults: Preprint

Grid-forming (GFM) inverter controls have illustrated many desirable features to enable bulk integration of renewable sources into the future power grid. However, the performance of GFM inverters during unbalanced faults remains under-explored. In this paper, a novel current-limiting method is proposed for GFM inverters to handle unbalanced fault conditions while providing voltage support to the main grid. The proposed current limiter combines concepts of dynamic virtual-impedance and current-reference saturation limiting, all built-up in the stationary reference frame to achieve improved current-limiting performance under unbalanced load/fault conditions. System-wide full-order transient simulations with multiple GFM inverters demonstrate the potential of the method and benchmark the performance against state-of-the-art current limiters. Simulation results portray improved voltage balancing performance of the proposed method compared to both current-reference saturation and virtual-impedance limiting.

Critical Clearing Time for Droop-Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters With Circular Current Limiting and Virtual Impedance Current Limiting

The critical clearing time is a crucial parameter for assessing the large-signal stability of grid-forming (GFM) inverters. Variations in current limiters can significantly impact an inverter's transient behavior during large disturbances. Here, this letter introduces a method based on the power-angle relationship to evaluate the fault recovery of a droop-controlled GFM inverter under a three-phase bolted fault scenario, considering both the circular current limiter and the virtual impedance method. High-fidelity simulations validate the accuracy of the proposed formulas in estimating the critical clearing time of the GFM inverter.

A Single-Stage Multilevel AC-DC Bidirectional Converter With Natural Grid Harmonic Elimination

Generally, AC-DC converters have an AC-DC stage followed by a DC-DC stage. In these two stage approaches, the AC-DC stage is hard-switched, whereas the DC-DC stage is soft-switched. Therefore, the devices in the AC-DC stage can be switched only at tens of kHz to avoid excessive switching losses, thus limiting the bandwidth of the current control loop. Hence, the control of these converters with distorted grid voltages requires multiple harmonic compensation loops or other complex control algorithms in order for the grid currents to comply with IEEE standards. By integrating both the stages, the devices in the AC-DC stage can also be soft-switched, thus facilitating higher switching frequency, and thereby higher current control bandwidth. This paper proposes an integrated multilevel bidirectional AC-DC converter with improved control bandwidth and disturbance rejection. It is shown experimentally that the high bandwidth current control loop of the converter can reject grid harmonic current disturbances, without the need for any compensation loops or complex control techniques, and comply with IEEE standards.

Transient Stability-Enhancing Method for Grid-Forming Inverters Under Current Limiting

The primary controller of a grid-forming (GFM) inverter governs the internal reference voltage and angle, which enables the inverter to naturally synchronize and share power with the connected grid; however, during disturbances on the grid caused by, e.g., line faults, overloading, or frequency and phase shifts, a GFM inverter can be pushed into a current-limited operation to protect the device against thermal damage. This can lead to a windup of the internal reference frequency generated by the primary controller and cause a total loss of synchronism with the grid. Here, to make the primary controller of GFM inverters more robust against transient instability, this paper proposes a method that manipulates the reference signals governed by the primary controller by introducing the concept of fictitious power. The fictitious power counteracts the integrator windup in the primary controller, which enables the current-limited inverter to conceive a stable operating point. This method is benchmarked against five state-of-the-art GFM inverter stabilization methods to evaluate its stability-enhancing performance. Full-order electromagnetic-transient simulations and experimental results of a hardware inverter test setup validate the benefits of the method to improve the transient stability of GFM inverters in the face of grid disturbances.

Resonance Suppression based on Predictive Control of Grid-following Inverters with LCL Filter in Weak Grid Condition

This paper presents an effective resonance suppression control when grid interactive inverter with LCL filter experience weak grid conditions. The resonance suppression mechanism is based on finite-set model predictive control (FSMPC) with adaptive cost function to alter the controller objectives seamlessly. The large parasitic impedance and low short circuit ratio (SCR) of weak grid challenges the operation of gridconnected inverters. Specifically, the LCL filter resonance may get excited, resulting in collapse of the inverter operation. To address this issue, an effective active damping approach is implemented in the proposed control. In the proposed active damping scheme for resonance suppression, the feedback currents are switched based on the operating conditions of inverter. During the stiff grid conditions, grid current serves as feedback to the controller. While in the weak grid conditions, the inverter current is selected as feedback signal. The toggling action between these two feedback currents is determined by comparing moving RMS of grid current with threshold current as constraint in the cost function of the proposed MPC scheme. The threshold current for toggling action is based on the reference active and reactive power setpoints plus an acceptable band of variation. The theoretical analysis is verified by several case studies.

A Universal Controller for Grid-Forming Inverters in Microgrid during Islanding for Low Transient Current

This paper presents a universal controller to reduce the transient current during islanding of microgrid. In the proposed universal controller, two sets of semi-parallel paths are formed, where one set produces voltage and phase-angle references for the grid-following (GFL) mode, and the other set produces the voltage and phase-angle references for the grid-forming (GFM) mode of operation for the inverters. Herein, the controller enables an inverter to universally operate in GFL and GFM mode, whereas, only one set of voltage and phase-angle reference is engaged for PWM signal generation. When the microgrid is disconnected from the grid, the universal controller switches the voltage and phase-angle references from GFL to GFM mode. The proposed controller ensures lower transient current by keeping the two sets of semi-parallel paths synchronized throughout the operation of the inverter and enabling seamless transition between the modes. The proposed controller is verified through hardware experiments under different scenarios in a laboratory scale microgrid for inverters transitioning from GFL to GFM mode after islanding.
