Copper emissions from a high volume air sampler

High volume air samplers (hi vols) are described which utilize a brush-type electric motor to power the fans used for pulling air through the filter. Anomalously high copper values were attributed to removal of copper from the commutator into the air stream due to arcing of the brushes and recirculation through the filter. Duplicate hi vols were set up under three operating conditions: (1) unmodified; (2) gasketed to prevent internal recirculation; and (3) gasketed and provided with a pipe to transport the motor exhaust some 20 feet away. The results of 5 days' operation demonstrate that hi vols can suddenly start emitting increased amounts of copper with no discernible operational indication, and that recirculation and capture on the filter can take place. Copper levels found with hi vols whose exhaust was discharged at a distance downwind were among the lowest found, and apparently provides a satisfactory solution to copper contamination.

Analysis of various descent trajectories for a hypersonic-cruise, cold-wall research airplane

The probable descent operating conditions for a hypersonic air-breathing research airplane were examined. Descents selected were cruise angle of attack, high dynamic pressure, high lift coefficient, turns, and descents with drag brakes. The descents were parametrically exercised and compared from the standpoint of cold-wall (367 K) aircraft heat load. The descent parameters compared were total heat load, peak heating rate, time to landing, time to end of heat pulse, and range. Trends in total heat load as a function of cruise Mach number, cruise dynamic pressure, angle-of-attack limitation, pull-up g-load, heading angle, and drag-brake size are presented.

Comparison of fracture mechanisms for carbon-epoxy composites under tensile loading

The effects of oxidative surface treatments and differences in resin crack sensitivity on the tensile properties of carbon-epoxy composites have been investigated. A comparison of the fracture mechanisms for two different fiber batches was made in both model and engineering composites, using unmodified and modified epoxy resin. It has been observed that two distinct characteristics occur in the fracture surfaces of most engineering composites; first, fibers which fracture at the surface result in cleavage failure and, second, those which have fractured elsewhere and pulled out. A detailed discussion of these observations is contained in this paper.

Large fracture toughness boron-epoxy composites

The high tensile strengths of strong interfacial bonding may be combined with the large fracture toughness of weak interfacial bonding in brittle fiber/brittle matrix composites by intermittently coating the filaments before layup so as to have random alternate weak and strong regions. Appropriate coating materials enable Cook-Gordon Mode I interfacial debonding to take place, which produces very long pull-out lengths with an associated large contribution to toughness. Unidirectional boron-epoxy composites have been so made which have toughnesses greater than 200 kJ/sq m while retaining rule of mixtures tensile strengths. Similar trends have been observed for crossply layups.

Design and fabrication of an end effector

The construction is described of a prototype mechanical hand or 'end effector' for use on a remotely controlled robot, but with possible application as a prosthetic device. An analysis of hand motions is reported, from which it is concluded that the two most important manipulations (apart from grasps) are to be able to pick up a tool and draw it into a nested grip against the palm, and to be able to hold a pistol-grip tool such as an electric drill and pull the trigger. A model was tested and found capable of both these operations.

Study of growth of single crystal ribbon in space

The technical feasibility is studied of growing single-crystal silicon ribbon in the space environment. Procedures are described for calculating the electromagnetic fields produced in a silicon ribbon by an rf shaping coil. The forces on the ribbon and the degree of shaping to be expected are determined. The expected steady-state temperature distribution in the ribbon is calculated in the one-dimensional approximation. Calculations on simplified models indicate, that lack of flatness of the shaped ribbon and excessive heating of the melt by the eddy currents induced by the shaping fields may pose problems. An analysis of the relative effects of various kinds of forces other than electromagnetic showed that in the space environment capillarity forces would dominate, and that the shape of the melt is thus principally determined by the shape of any solids with which it comes in contact. This suggests that ribbon may be produced simply by drawing between parallel wires. A concept is developed for a process of off-angle growth, in which the ribbon is pulled at an angle to the solidification front. Such a process promises to offer increased growth rate, better homogeneity, and thinner ribbon.

Effect of hinge-moment parameters on elevator stick forces in rapid maneuvers

The importance of the stick force per unit normal acceleration as a criterion of longitudinal stability and the critical dependence of this gradient on elevator hinge moment parameters are investigated with special reference to transient effects for maneuvers of short duration. The analysis shows that different combinations of elevator parameters, which give the same stick force per unit acceleration in turns, give widely different force variations during the entries into and recoveries from steady turns and during maneuvers of short duration such as abrupt pull-ups. The stick force per unit acceleration is greater for abrupt than for gradual control movements.

Contamination control in hybrid microelectronic modules

Thin and thick film test specimens were utilized to study the effects of silicone and epoxy hybrid microcircuit coatings on 0.025 mm diameter aluminum and gold ultrasonic bonds, and 0.051 diameter gold pulsed-thermocompression bonds. Chip-to-substrate and substrate-to-substrate geometries were included. Because sealed packages were utilized, a test pattern design was incorporated that allowed the determination of bond failures by making resistance measurements external to the package after the various environmental tests. All wire bonds were non-destructively pull tested prior to sealing. Tests included the PIN test, temperature cycling, and high temperature storage.

Experiments in the correction of mirror figures via force deformation

The prospect of placing large astronomical telescopes in earth orbit, free of atmospheric degradations, has created a need for ultrahigh-quality large optics. Large mirrors, several meters in diameter, must be produced and maintained with a surface quality that is an order of magnitude better than that typically used in terrestrial telescopes. This paper describes the experimental development of automatic control techniques for correcting optical surfaces to a precision of 0.01 microns rms. The approach consists of interferometrically measuring the mirror figure error and then, using servomechanisms, push or pull on the back surface of the mirror to reform the optical surface

Vapor ingestion in a cylindrical tank with a concave elliptical bottom

An approximate analytical technique is presented for estimating the liquid residual in a tank of arbitrary geometry due to vapor ingestion at any drain rate and acceleration level. The bulk liquid depth at incipient pull-through is defined in terms of the Weber and Bond numbers and two functions that describe the fluid velocity field and free surface shape appropriate to the tank geometry. Numerical results are obtained for the Centaur LH2 tank using limiting approximations to these functions.

Methods of analyzing wind-tunnel data for dynamic flight conditions

The effects of power on the stability and the control characteristics of an airplane are discussed and methods of analysis are given for evaluating certain dynamic characteristics of the airplane that are not directly discernible from wind tunnel tests alone. Data are presented to show how the characteristics of a model tested in a wind tunnel are affected by power. The response of an airplane to a rolling and a yawing disturbance is discussed, particularly in regard to changes in wing dihedral and fin area. Solutions of the lateral equations of motion are given in a form suitable for direct computations. An approximate formula is developed that permits the rapid estimation of the accelerations produced during pull-up maneuvers involving abrupt elevator deflections.

Space tug spacecraft/module exchanger (on-orbit servicer)

On-orbit exchange of spacecraft modules containing experiment or subsystem hardware or consumables performed at goesynchronous altitudes with the space tug and at lower altitudes with the shuttle is described. One promising concept for such a tug-mounted spacecraft module exchange is the McDonnell Douglas Direct-Access Servicer. This servicer can also be used in low orbit, mounted on the shuttle. In this concept, push-pull injector/retractor devices are combined with a rotating indexer to provide a minimum-complexity mechanism with a high capacity for coincident exchange of many modules.

New contributions to the problem of capture

Libration-point capture is analyzed in the framework of the restricted three-body problem in order to obtain general results capable of predicting the major features of an arbitrary postcapture orbit, with specific reference to capture as the presumed mode of origin of Jupiter's outer satellites. Some examples of libration-point capture are computed, the time a body remains captured is estimated, and a long-term numerical integration of orbits is carried out which shows that the equation used to estimate capture lifetimes is quite conservative. An extended capture criterion is proposed and used to demonstrate that direct postcapture orbits lie outside retrograde ones. Mass change involving one or both primaries is evaluated as a means of producing permanent capture, it is found that mass-change effects can produce 'pull-down capture', and consideration is given to the orbital evolution of Jupiter's outer satellites. The effect of drag in the solar nebula or in a nebula around proto-Jupiter on the capture process is briefly investigated. It is concluded that a capture origin for the outer satellites is improbable within the last 4.6 billion years but that either mass change or nebula drag could have been effective in producing capture.

The next 25 years: Industrialization of space - Rationale for planning

A methodology for planning the industralization of space is discussed. The suggested approach combines the extrapolative ('push') approach, in which alternative futures are projected on the basis of past and current trends and tendencies, with the normative ('pull') view, in which an ideal state in the far future is postulated and policies and decisions are directed toward its attainment. Time-reversed vectors of the future are tied to extrapolated, trend-oriented vectors of the quasi-present to identify common plateaus or stepping stones in technological development. Important steps in the industrialization of space to attain the short-range goals of production of space-derived energy, goods and services and the long-range goal of space colonization are discussed.
