On-Board Planning for New Millenium Deep Space One Autonomy

The Deep Space One (DS1) mission, scheduled to fly in 1998, will be the first NASA spacecraft to feature an on-board planner. The planner is part of an artificial intelligence based control architecture that comprises the planner/scheduler, a plan execution engine, and a model-based fault diagnosis and reconfiguration engine...This paper describes the on-board planning and scheduling component of the DS1 autonomy architecture.

Application of Statistical Filter Theory to the Optimal Estimation of Position and Velocity on Board a Circumlunar Vehicle

Concepts from statistical filter theory are applied to the problem of in-flight determination of the position and velocity of a space vehicle for the purposes of midcourse guidance. The source of information is assumed to be an arbitrary sequence of measurements of any desired set of "observables" (e.g., space angles), the measurements being corrupted by additive errors so that the position and velocity are never known perfectly. A state transition approach is employed which leads naturally to a computational scheme that is readily implemented by a digital computer. The scheme can be regarded as a dynamical time-varying filter which weights the incoming observations in an optimal sense for use in producing an up-to-date optimal estimate of position and velocity. The advantages of the scheme are (1) it provides the best possible estimate (minimum error) based upon ensemble statistics of injection conditions and measurement errors; (2) it is extremely versatile, not requiring adherence to a predetermined observation schedule or reference trajectory; and (3) the computations are sufficiently simple to be practical in an on-board computer. A digital computer simulation of the proposed system is employed to demonstrate the feasibility of an all on-board system and to illustrate the performance attainable in a hypothetical physical situation.

Adhesive-backed terminal board eliminates mounting screws

Low-profile terminal board is used in dense electronic circuits where mounting and working space is limited. The board has a thin layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive backing which eliminates the need for mounting screws.

Optical system facilitates inspection of printed circuit boards

Optical comparator method determines the quality and registration of surface features of double-sided printed circuit boards. Color-coded superimposed images of both sides of a printed circuit board are presented to view, clearly showing details and registration of the circuitry.

Ceramic wiring board increases packaging density of electronic modules

Ceramic multilayer wiring board interconnects large scale integration /LSI/ modules which dissipate nearly 2W/cc. Extremely high packaging density is possible by application of alumina cover hermetically sealed to board. Signal interconnections are completely dependent on transfer heat between layers.

Safety in earth orbit study. Volume 2: Analysis of hazardous payloads, docking, on-board survivability

Detailed and supporting analyses are presented of the hazardous payloads, docking, and on-board survivability aspects connected with earth orbital operations of the space shuttle program. The hazards resulting from delivery, deployment, and retrieval of hazardous payloads, and from handling and transport of cargo between orbiter, sortie modules, and space station are identified and analyzed. The safety aspects of shuttle orbiter to modular space station docking includes docking for assembly of space station, normal resupply docking, and emergency docking. Personnel traffic patterns, escape routes, and on-board survivability are analyzed for orbiter with crew and passenger, sortie modules, and modular space station, under normal, emergency, and EVA and IVA operations.

New standoffs provide high-reliability component mounting for printed wiring boards

Designs provide such advantages as inspectable solder joints from both sides of boards; stress relief in lead wires; low-impedance thermal paths; matched coefficients of lead wire thermal expansion; minimum webbing of conformal coatings to lead wires; positive mounting of part bodies to boards; and conductive mass for transient heat sink requirements.

Information Management System for the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB)

A study was made to establish the requirements for an integrated state-wide information management system for water quality control and water quality rights for the State of California. The data sources and end requirements were analyzed for the data collected and used by the numerous agencies, both State and Federal, as well as the nine Regional Boards under the jurisdiction of the State Board. The report details the data interfaces and outlines the system design. A program plan and statement of work for implementation of the project is included.

Advanced On-Board Processor (AOP)

Advanced On-board Processor the (AOP) uses large scale integration throughout and is the most advanced space qualified computer of its class in existence today. It was designed to satisfy most spacecraft requirements which are anticipated over the next several years. The AOP design utilizes custom metallized multigate arrays (CMMA) which have been designed specifically for this computer. This approach provides the most efficient use of circuits, reduces volume, weight, assembly costs and provides for a significant increase in reliability by the significant reduction in conventional circuit interconnections. The required 69 CMMA packages are assembled on a single multilayer printed circuit board which together with associated connectors constitutes the complete AOP. This approach also reduces conventional interconnections thus further reducing weight, volume and assembly costs.

On-board data management study for EOPAP

The requirements, implementation techniques, and mission analysis associated with on-board data management for EOPAP were studied. SEASAT-A was used as a baseline, and the storage requirements, data rates, and information extraction requirements were investigated for each of the following proposed SEASAT sensors: a short pulse 13.9 GHz radar, a long pulse 13.9 GHz radar, a synthetic aperture radar, a multispectral passive microwave radiometer facility, and an infrared/visible very high resolution radiometer (VHRR). Rate distortion theory was applied to determine theoretical minimum data rates and compared with the rates required by practical techniques. It was concluded that practical techniques can be used which approach the theoretically optimum based upon an empirically determined source random process model. The results of the preceding investigations were used to recommend an on-board data management system for (1) data compression through information extraction, optimal noiseless coding, source coding with distortion, data buffering, and data selection under command or as a function of data activity, (2) for command handling, (3) for spacecraft operation and control, and (4) for experiment operation and monitoring.

Satellite on-board processing for earth resources data

The feasibility was investigated of an on-board earth resources data processor launched during the 1980-1990 time frame. Projected user applications were studied to define the data formats and the information extraction algorithms that the processor must execute. Based on these constraints, and the constraints imposed by the available technology, on-board processor systems were designed and their feasibility evaluated. Conclusions and recommendations are given.

Satellite on-board processing for earth resources data

Results of a survey of earth resources user applications and their data requirements, earth resources multispectral scanner sensor technology, and preprocessing algorithms for correcting the sensor outputs and for data bulk reduction are presented along with a candidate data format. Computational requirements required to implement the data analysis algorithms are included along with a review of computer architectures and organizations. Computer architectures capable of handling the algorithm computational requirements are suggested and the environmental effects of an on-board processor discussed. By relating performance parameters to the system requirements of each of the user requirements the feasibility of on-board processing is determined for each user. A tradeoff analysis is performed to determine the sensitivity of results to each of the system parameters. Significant results and conclusions are discussed, and recommendations are presented.

Conceptual design of an on-board optical processor with components

The specification of components for a spacecraft on-board optical processor was investigated. A space oriented application of optical data processing and the investigation of certain aspects of optical correlators were examined. The investigation confirmed that real-time optical processing has made significant advances over the past few years, but that there are still critical components which will require further development for use in an on-board optical processor. The devices evaluated were the coherent light valve, the readout optical modulator, the liquid crystal modulator, and the image forming light modulator.
