Reverse Logistics Ev Battery Recycling Agent Base Model

This represents the initial regional tier of the electric vehicle (EV) battery recycling agent base model. Through this model, we can ascertain the number of EV purchases at both the state and regional levels. We employ census data to develop a diverse household profile to inform decisions regarding the acquisition of new or used EVs. The number of EV purchases at the state level will affect the future demand for recycling, reuse, and repurposing of end-of-life EV batteries. Additionally, tax credits, EV rebate programs, and the financial capacity of households will influence the number of EV purchases, thereby further impacting the demand for EV battery recycling.

Adapter Signaling Evaluations on EVs [Slides]

In case J3400 and J3400/1 define a basic analog signaling approach for DC charging adapters to communicate over-temperature events to both the EV and EVSE. They also require the EV to implement mitigation and corrective actions in cases where the EVSE does not respond to adapter thermal signals. In this study, multiple production vehicles were evaluated for responsiveness to assess field readiness and ensure consistent performance in accordance with the SAE J1772, J3400 and J3400/1 standards. A series of test cases were developed and executed across different vehicles, using an adapter thermal breakout fixture designed by NLR for evaluations. The results revealed notable variations in behavior: some vehicles expected to comply with J1772 were found to be non-responsive under certain conditions. Additionally, while some EV OEMs appear to align with the J3400 standard, discrepancies exist due to its evolving nature, resulting in inconsistent implementation of the latest requirements. These findings highlight the need for alignment within standards organizations to ensure consistent interpretation, encourage compliance, and reduce potential confusion across implementations.

Analysis and Overview of Hybrid Wired and Wireless Bi-Directional EV Charger Systems

Here, this paper analyzes and overviews hybrid wired and wireless bi-directional Electric Vehicle (EV) charging systems with a primary focus on resonant compensation methods that enable a unified power conversion architecture. Four compensation configurations based on series–series and LCC–LCC resonant networks are systematically evaluated for both wired transformer-based and wireless coupler-based operation. The analysis examines how coupling conditions, resonant component selection, and auxiliary compensation tuning influence voltage gain characteristics, resonant tank current magnitude and phase, and operating frequency requirements. Normalized frequency-domain results are presented to directly compare reactive current behavior and voltage regulation capability under wired and wireless operating conditions. A 60 kW bi-directional charger case study is used to demonstrate the feasibility of retaining a common hardware platform while accommodating distinct coupling scenarios through compensation tuning rather than structural modification. The presented results provide design-oriented insights into resonant network selection and compensation strategies for scalable and flexible hybrid EV charging systems.

An Overview of Electric Vehicle Load Modeling Strategies for Grid Integration Studies

The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has emerged as a solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, which has motivated the implementation of public policies to promote their use in several countries. However, the high adoption of EVs poses challenges for the electricity sector, as it would imply an increase in energy demand and possible impacts on the power quality (PQ) of the power grid. Therefore, it is important to conduct EV integration studies in the power grid to determine the amount that can be incorporated without causing problems and identify the areas of the power sector that will require reinforcements. Accurate EV load patterns are required for this type of study that, through mathematical modeling, reflect both the dynamic behavior and the factors that influence the decision to recharge EVs. This article aims to present an overview of EVs, examine the different factors considered in the literature for modeling EV load patterns, and review modeling methods. EV load modeling methods are classified into deterministic, statistical, and machine learning. The article shows that each modeling method has its advantages, disadvantages, and data requirements, ranging from simple load modeling to more accurate models requiring large datasets.

Smart Charging of Fleet and Personal Electric Vehicles through Joint Vehicle-to-Grid Optimization

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) strategies offer advantages over unmanaged charging (V0G) by enhancing grid stability, reducing fleet operation costs, and supporting integration of variable generation resources. This research develops a day-ahead optimization framework linked with agent-based simulations to evaluate coordinated V2G participation by fleet and personal EVs under 5 energy-pricing settings in Austin, Texas. Three scenarios (V0G, fleet-only V2G, and joint-V2G) are examined, considering real-time price and grid profiles, health-damage costs, and operational constraints for both fleet and personal EVs. Results show how V2G scenarios shift fleet EV charging to mid-day while enabling strategic battery-discharge during evening peaks, mitigating grid stress and lowering EV energy costs. V2G delivers close to 80% energy-cost savings for a 2000-EV fleet in Austin on grid-stressed days, with 55% lower charging pollutant outputs. Joint-V2G amplifies system-level benefits by complementing fleet discharge, but smart-charging equipment costs can offset those benefits.

Resources for E-Mobility Program Implementation [Slides]

The Energy to Communities (E2C) peer-learning cohort program provides technical assistance to groups of 15 community entities around a common energy topic over the course of 6 months. Every month, participants join a virtual meeting where they hear from experts and exchange strategies and best practices with their peers. This cohort, "Successful Energy Project Implementation" will explore common challenges in implementing energy projects and learn strategies to turn project plans into reality. Each participant will focus on a local energy project or priority as a cornerstone for their learning throughout the series.This presentation overviews the basics of developing electric mobility projects with emphasis on leveraging the right tools to advance technical scoping and program design.

Probing room temperature indirect and minimum direct band gaps of h-BN

Abstract Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has attracted considerable interest as an ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductor. Experimental studies focused on the detailed near band-edge structure of h-BN at room temperature are still lacking. We report a direct experimental measurement of the near band-edge structure performed on h-BN quasi-bulk wafers via photocurrent excitation spectroscopy (PES). PES resolved the band-to-band transitions near M- and K-points in the Brillion zone (BZ), from which the room temperature indirect band gap of E g M K ∼6.02 eV, minimum direct bandgap at M-point of E g M = 6.36 eV and next lowest direct energy bandgap at K-point of E g K = 6.56 eV , have been simultaneously determined for the first time experimentally. The measured energy differences between K- and M-points in the conduction band minimum (CBM) and valence band maximum (VBM) are Δ E C M K = 0.54 eV and Δ E V M K = 0.34 eV, respectively, in good agreement with the calculation results. Significantly differing from its III-nitride wurtzite counterparts, in which only electrons and holes in the conduction and valence band extremes at the Γ-point are predominantly involved in the optical and transport processes, the results highlighted that charge carriers associated with both M- and K-valleys control to the optical excitation, recombination and charge transport processes in h-BN.

Solid-State Syntheses, Crystallographic Spatial Disorders, Thermal Behaviors, and Bandgaps of Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Manganese Halides: A2Mn(Cl/Br)4 (A = NH4+, C(NH2)3+, & C3H4N2+)

By systematically optimizing solid-state synthesis via the concerted use of differential scanning calorimetry and in-situ variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, we report the discovery of four new hybrid organic-inorganic manganese halides A2Mn(Cl/Br)4 (A = NH4+, C(NH2)3+, C3H4N2+), with emphasis on how the organic fragment geometry, polarity, and electron-donating properties influence crystallographic spatial disorders, thermal behaviors, and optical band gaps. With a nonpolar tetrahedral cation, as in (NH4)2MnCl4 (P21/c, mP30) or (NH4)2MnBr4 (C2/c, mC180), the direct optical bandgaps (4.36–4.28 eV) are wider than those with an organic nonpolar planar geometry, as in (C(NH2)3)2MnBr4 (P21/c, mP300, 4.07 eV), or an organic polar planar geometry, as in (C3H4N2+)2MnBr4 (I41/a, tI384, 4.05 eV). Furthermore, the organic components affect the spatial arrangement and dimensionality of the resulting inorganic frameworks comprised of Mn(Cl/Br)6 octahedra, with varying distortions, or spatially disordered MnBr4 tetrahedra. These resulting trends, coupled with the systematic investigation into synthesis, and the motivation behind elucidating the nuanced role of the organic cation, altogether expand upon the phase-space of hybrid materials beyond perovskites and demonstrate the potential for a rational design of hybrid materials with tailored optoelectronic functionalities for advanced energy applications.

A Chemist’s Guide to Solid-State Qubits: Diamond Color Centers as Embedded Vacancy-Centered Molecules

Diamond point defects or color centers are at the crux of solid-state quantum technology applications, from computing to sensing. Modeling molecular qubits has advanced by leaps and bounds mainly due to the advanced quantum mechanical (QM) tools in the arsenal of quantum chemists for modeling (isolated) molecular systems, which should be easily translatable for analogous systems in the solid state. Here, we simulate a series of diamond defects: a carbon vacancy (V C ) and second row substitutions that are adjacent to a V C or D C V C , with D = B, N, and O, to evaluate their magnetic and optical properties. We applied molecular orbital principles, an embedded cluster method, and a multiconfigurational QM theory to computationally characterize the above-mentioned defects for a multitude of spin, charge, and excited states. Our computational approach delivered high-quality QM insights that compare well with experiments. Furthermore, with this framework, we confirm the spin-triplets B C V C – and O C V C 0 to be analogous to N C V C – , with calculated bright transitions that respectively correspond to UV (3.80 eV) and blue (2.65 eV) light absorption and emission lifetimes (τ) of 2.3 and 5.6 ns, which are higher in energy and more short-lived (and thus brighter) than that for N C V C – : green (2.26 eV), τ = 9.5 ns.

Development of a high fidelity CFD model for solvent evaporation and transport in porous structure during battery electrode drying

An efficient battery manufacturing process is the key to the mass production of Electric Vehicles (EV), in which drying is one of the most energy-intensive steps significantly influencing the battery cell performance. An accurate 3D CFD model for drying is essential for predicting the drying mechanism and optimizing its parameters. By optimizing the drying process, it is possible to reduce energy consumption and cost during battery manufacturing, minimize binder loading and maximize active material loading to achieve superior electrochemical performances and facilitate wider and faster public adoption of EV. This project aims to optimize the drying process during electrode manufacturing by leveraging high-fidelity, porous electrode simulations for solvent evaporation. By optimizing this process, we seek to reduce energy consumption during battery manufacturing, while minimizing binder loading and maximizing active material loading, with the overall goal of enhancing electrical vehicle performance.

Digital Twin Based Condition Monitoring of LCC-LCC Inductive Power Transfer Systems

Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems provide a flexible, hands-free charging opportunity to electric vehicles (EV). The resonant network components and the transmitter and receiver coils are often subjected to high voltages or currents. Component aging in the compensation network and coils of resonant IPT systems is detrimental to the reliability and power transfer efficiency of the IPT system. Monitoring the component health of such multi-element complex systems requires robust optimization algorithms. This paper discusses condition monitoring of a resonant IPT system for an EV charger using a digital twin model. A hybrid estimation algorithm based on genetic algorithms and adaptive particle swarm optimization is developed to estimate the parameters of the digital twin model. Simulation results are used to verify the monitoring capabilities of the developed algorithm under various operating conditions of the IPT system.

UL 1741SC Conformance Development, Evaluation, and Proposal [Slides]

V2G AC is a type of grid interconnection by mobile battery that transforms an EV into a DER with the potential to stabilize the grid and lower costs for electricity. UL 1741SC is a critical new standard to enable grid interconnection of V2G AC-capable vehicles, by defining requirements for V2G AC-intended EVSEs as a gatekeeper between the grid and the EV to support grid safety, such as through redundant voltage trip (namely oversight). EVSE manufacturers need a clear set of conformance test cases and criteria by which to evaluate their equipment and confirm the compliance with UL 1741SC, so that the EVSEs performs as intended for the grid safety. Hence, NLR identified necessary conformance tests and performed the tests identified to understand the maturity.

Aliovalent gallium dopants remove Ti 3+ defects and improve photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water oxidation properties of LaTiO 2 N

LaTiO 2 N is a promising semiconductor for the water splitting reaction due to its 2.1 eV band gap and stability against corrosion. However, its solar energy conversion is limited by Ti 3+ recombination defects introduced during ammonolysis. Here we show for the first time that Ti 3+ defects in LaTiO 2 N can be suppressed with incorporation of 2, 5, and 10% aliovalent gallium (Ga 3+ ) dopants during synthesis via the layered La 2 Ti 2 O 7 intermediate. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy on the solid powders confirms a reduction in the Ti 3+ donor density from 2.97 × 10 17 cm −3 for the non-doped material to ∼6.24 × 10 16 cm −3 for 5% Ga-doped LaTiO 2 N. The remaining Ti 3+ defects are concentrated near the LaTiO 2 N surface, according to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The defect reduction shifts the optical absorption edge from 2.02 to 2.09 eV and eliminates a broad absorption band at 1050 nm from the optical absorption spectra. It also removes a 1.0–1.7 eV sub-band gap photovoltage signal from surface photovoltage spectra. This suggests that empty Ti 3+ d-orbitals are located 1.0–1.7 eV above the LaTiO 2 N valence band edge. Removing these recombination states with increasing Ga 3+ content enhances the photoconversion efficiency of LaTiO 2 N during water oxidation. The optimized 2 wt% CoO x -loaded 5% Ga-doped LaTi O2 N material has a 16% AQE (400 nm) for O 2 production from aqueous silver nitrate solution and a ∼2.1 mA cm −2 water oxidation photocurrent at 1.23 V under 100 mW cm −2 Xe arc lamp illumination. The water oxidation photocurrent is stable during a 50 min test, and the Faraday efficiency for O 2 generation is 97%, confirming short-term corrosion stability of LaTiO 2 N. Altogether, these results provide a better understanding of the distribution, concentration, and impact of Ti 3+ defects on the optical, photovoltage, and photoelectrochemical properties of LaTiO 2 N. In combination with other defect control strategies, aliovalent Ga 3+ doping can help bring the solar energy conversion efficiency of LaTiO 2 N closer to the theoretical limit.

Adsorption, charge transfer and a coverage-driven transition of alkali metals on rutile TiO 2 (110)

The interaction of alkali metals with metal oxide surfaces is central to tuning surface reactivity in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis. Here we present a comprehensive DFT+U study of the adsorption of alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) on the (110) surface of rutile TiO 2 . At low coverage (θ = 1/8), all alkali metals bind preferentially to bridging oxygen sites with adsorption energies in the range −4.06 to −3.33 eV, transferring nearly one full electron (0.92–0.99 |e|) to the substrate and inducing Ti 4+ → Ti 3+ reduction. The excess charge localizes preferentially at subsurface Ti sites in the form of small polarons. Diffusion barriers indicate facile motion along bridging-oxygen rows, whereas inter-row hopping is strongly hindered. Coverage effects were examined systematically for potassium: adsorption energy and charge transfer per K atom decrease monotonically with increasing θ. Strikingly, a sharp energy discontinuity occurs between θ = 4/8 and θ = 5/8 (ΔE ≈ 1 eV per atom), which we identify as a coverage-driven structural transition arising from steric packing constraints and enhanced K–K electrostatic repulsion once every (1×1) surface cell is occupied. This structural transition perfectly correlates with a dramatic drop in the work function down to an ultra-low minimum of 0.84 eV at θ=5/8, followed by a metallization- driven recovery at higher coverages. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations confirm zigzag K arrangements at moderate coverage (θ = 1/3), while at high coverage (θ = 2/3) short-range K–K correlations emerge without long-range order. These results provide atomistic insight into the structure–activity relationships underlying alkali promotion effects on oxide-supported catalysts.

Li Stripping Behavior of Anode‐Free Solid‐State Batteries Under Intermittent‐Current Discharge Conditions

Anode‐free manufacturing holds promise to enable high energy densities and lower Lithium (Li)‐metal solid‐state batteries (LMSSBs). Nevertheless, in contrast to thick Li foil (>50 µm), the stripping capacity of in situ‐formed Li (10–30 µm) is limited due to diminished creep flow, resulting in reduced accessible capacity. This study explores the correlation between stripping capacity and surface roughness of garnet Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) solid electrolyte. The results reveal that stripping capacity can be enhanced through the surface modification of solid electrolytes. Additionally, this study scrutinizes the stripping behavior of in situ Li under intermittent‐current discharge conditions, which are more relevant to the operational conditions of electric vehicles (EVs). It is demonstrated that, when compared to constant‐current stripping, intermittent‐current stripping effectively suppresses void formation and enhances the stripping capacity of in situ Li by 40%. It is considered that the intermittent current inhibits the accumulation of Li vacancies, thereby delaying the void formation. These findings provide valuable insights into the development of high‐performance anode‐free LMSSBs for EVs.

Neutron detector response modeling in NOvA

Neutrons can present a significant challenge for neutrino experiments in which energy reconstruction is critical. With the ability to escape detection completely and with a weak correlation between their kinetic energy and any eventual energy deposition, it is difficult to fully account for neutrons produced in neutrino interactions. This in turn leads to significant model dependence when evaluating neutron-related systematic uncertainties. The NOvA experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment with a high-statistics sample of antineutrino data collected by its near detector. We report an excess relative to data of simulated neutron candidates with low energy depositions when using standard Geant4 physics lists. The simulation excess is traced to an overabundance of secondary photons produced from interactions of neutrons with kinetic energy greater than \SI{20}{\mega\eV}. Improved agreement with data is obtained by applying the data-driven neutron-on-carbon \menate model for neutrons between \SI{20}{\mega\eV} and ${\sim}$\SI{100}{\mega\eV}. With \menate, the residual oversimulation is more uniform across the calorimetric neutron energy spectrum, suggesting possible overproduction of primary neutrons by the GENIE neutrino interaction generator. These results motivate the adoption of \menate-supplemented Geant4 simulation as the nominal simulation in the production of future \nova simulation.
