Simple Low-process Radiation Simulation For Unity Game Engine

This is a set of Unity components that use the Unity game engine's transform and collision systems to provide a reasonably representative approximation of any number of unique radiation sources and the collective dose they deliver to a user.

Multiplayer Engineering

INL engineers developed a special purpose software framework designed to establish real-time connections between multiple running Unity instances. The framework is developed in Unity, a game engine development platform. This framework programmatically attaches functions to engineering models, enabling users to interact with, observe, and make changes to virtual models. These interactions are broadcasted through websocket connections, and received by other engineers in real-time.

Portable interactive visualization of large-scale simulations in geotechnical engineering using Unity3D

Development in large-scale geotechnical engineering simulation places tremendous demand for efficient visualization of such simulation data. This study presents a lightweight software tool, i.e. Geotechnical Interactive Visualization (GIV), as a solution to this challenge, which achieves efficient interactive visualization of large-scale simulations data in geotechnical engineering. Visualization data flow and algorithms specifically optimized for common geotechnical engineering applications are implemented in GIV. GIV can visualize geotechnical structure models with time-varying attributes attached to mesh with fixed topology, and also models with time-varying mesh topologies but no attributes attached, the two most common visualization tasks in geotechnical engineering. Furthermore, challenges for large-scale simulation data visualization, including parallel simulation data redundancy, massive data size, dynamic user interaction, and portability are overcome via specifically designed algorithms for simulation data preprocessing and optimized visualization modules using the powerful 3D rendering and interactive game engine Unity3D. Comparison of GIV with several widely used visualization tools for the visualization of large-scale idealized datasets and realistic geotechnical simulations highlights the visualization efficiency, smooth interactivity, and lightweight features of GIV.

Toward 3D data visualization using virtual reality tools

Virtual Reality (VR) offers the opportunity to display data, instrumentation, and experimental setups in three dimensions and gives the user the ability to interact with the objects. This technology moves visualization beyond two-dimensional projections on a flat screen with a fixed field of view in which a keyboard or another similar controller is needed to change the view. Advances in both hardware and software for VR make it possible for the non-expert to develop visualization tools for scientific applications both for viewing and for sharing data or diagnostic hardware between users in three dimensions. Furthermore, this manuscript describes application development using two VR software tools, Unity gaming engine and A-frame, for visualizing data and high energy physics targets.

Exploration ToolKit (ExTK)

The Exploration Toolkit (ExTK) is a reusable Extended Reality (XR) system developed for incorporating and exploring 3-Dimensional (3-D) computer aided design (CAD) models in XR, with a primary focus on Augmented Reality (AR). The ExTK consists of a Developer Mode and a User Mode. In Developer Mode, ExTK provides developers with the ability to easily import 3-D CAD models and activate desired exploration functionality and layout. Multiple models can be added to a single instantiation of the ExTK using Unity's Scene capability. Exploration functions include scaling, rotating, explode/contract, animations, hiding parts, submodules, and measurement functions. In User Mode, ExTK provides a menu system that allows users to select models and initiate exploration functions. ExTK is architected for reusability and developers can customize the ExTK layout and functions according to application needs. ExTK is designed to be hardware agnostic, although initial development focused on the Microsoft HoloLens as the primary deployment platform. The ExTK is developed using the Unity Game Engine Development Platform. Cross-domain digital twin architecture for predictive maintenance via machine learning and Large Language Models

This research introduces a comprehensive framework for creating and deploying a digital twin platform for continuous monitoring and predictive maintenance within industrial settings. Through utilizing advanced technologies, including Unreal Engine 5, Unity 3D, the Message Queue Telemetry Transport protocol, Random Forest machine learning algorithms, and Large Language Models (LLMs), we establish a platform that digitally reproduces physical equipment and translates digital controls into real-world actions. This facilitates preventive maintenance approaches and improves operational effectiveness. The digital twin platform gathers sensor data from operational equipment, analyzes it using machine learning, and delivers practical insights to prevent potential malfunctions and enhance equipment performance. Furthermore, the incorporation of a web portal enables efficient monitoring and access to historical data, educational materials, and equipment status information. Preliminary findings indicate that digital twins can transform industrial equipment management and maintenance methodologies.

Game theoretic modeling and optimization of competition and collaboration in dual channel electronic waste supply chains

The rapid growth of electronic waste (e-waste) presents critical challenges for sustainable resource recovery and environmental protection. This study develops a dual-channel closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) model formulated as a hierarchical Stackelberg game, that integrates dynamic pricing and cost-sharing mechanisms to optimize both economic and environmental outcomes. The model explicitly captures strategic interactions between manufacturer-led and third-party recycling channels, accounting for consumer behavior, regulatory incentives, and market competition. Numerical simulations conducted (implemented over a four-iteration horizon using a commercial optimization solver) show that, relative to the baseline equilibrium, manufacturer profit increases from 11.6 thousand USD to 37.9 thousand USD (+226.8%), total recycled volume rises from 7,848 to 7,942 units (+1.2%), and collector profit nearly doubles under cost-sharing, enabling more equitable profit distribution. Furthermore, scenario-based simulations across Sub-Saharan Africa, high-income economies, and emerging Asian industrial countries reveal that infrastructure quality, policy intensity, and labor costs critically shape recycling efficiency and profit allocation. These findings demonstrate that subsidies alone are insufficient to ensure system efficiency. Instead, coordinated strategies that integrate internal incentive alignment with context-sensitive policy support are required. Overall, this study offers a robust framework for designing resilient, efficient, and regionally adaptable e-waste management systems.

Editorial for the Virtual Special Issue of Journal of Power Sources “Low temperature fuel cells and electrolysers” - Science and engineering: Let's play this game hand in hand!

Electrochemistry is already and will increasingly be amongst the major drivers of our energetic mix decarbonization, so to fight anthropogenic global warming. The hydrogen economy vector (ideally produced in water electrolysers using renewable electricity and transformed back into electricity in fuel cells), in parallel with the conversion of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas into value-added products are seen as pillars of the so-called green and sustainable Energy Revolution. The hydrogen technologies presently attract increasing interest, their momentum growing irremediably in Europe, Asia and Americas. Here, this Virtual Special Issue (VSI) gathers the latest scientific results of major research laboratories worldwide, all addressing various aspects of electrochemical energy and material conversion processes.

Spinning the Facts against Genetically Engineered Foods?

A signaling game is developed in order to derive the equilibrium conditions under which special interest groups (SIGs) involved in the controversial debate over genetically engineered (GE) foods have the incentive to truthfully reveal their information or spin facts regarding the health impact of GE foods. Consumers can choose to inspect information provided by SIGs at a cost. The risk of spinning facts is much higher for pro-GE groups, because if it turns out that a certain GE food is unsafe, the penalty will be severe. However, anti-GE groups can still spin facts at low risk even if consumers choose to inspect. This helps explain why some pro-GE groups, particularly the biotech industry, tend to remain silent. Revealing information regarding the safety of GE foods could be counterproductive given pre-existing public skepticism. Consumers may not make “better” decisions with more information provided because more information increases their inspection costs. When it is costlier for consumers to inspect, it is more likely that anti-GE groups will continue to spin facts about the negative health impact of GE foods.
