Boron-Based Neutron Scintillator Screen Characterization with X-Rays and Neutrons

Recent work on boron-based neutron scintillator screens suggests these screens can offer superior performance when compared to commonly used screens. Borated neutron scintillator screens perform well in terms of light output (5-6 times greater than a standard Gadox screen) and detection effi-ciency (larger than standard LiF+ZnS screens). However, previously manu-factured boron-based screens have exhibited non-uniform surface coating and a poor mixture between phosphor and converter particles. The objective of this work was to evaluate newly fabricated scintillator screens to deter-mine if enhanced fabrication methods produced a more homogeneous distribution between neutron converter and scintillation phosphor particles. Uniformity of scintillator material deposition was also inspected. This new iteration of screens appeared more uniform than previous generations with the new coating method improving surface chemistry and scintillator material homogeneity. Additionally, a new methodology for screen characterization, involving the correlation of a neutron image taken with a borated scintillator screen to X-ray computed tomography of that same screen, was demonstrated to elucidate a relationship between scintillator screen thickness and relative light output of the screen under neutron exposure. This method suggested that the ideal thickness of scintillator material was ~150 µm to maximize light output of the screen.

High-Intensity UV Exposure for the Rapid Screening of Silicon Photovoltaic Architectures

Advanced Si photovoltaic architectures incorporate different materials and processing pathways that influence degradation modes. Ultraviolet-induced degradation (UVID) is an understudied degradation mode for advanced cell architectures and is of increasing concern to industry due to growing adoption of UV-transparent encapsulation and bifacial technologies. In order to adopt new and evolving technologies confidently, novel component materials and processing techniques must be evaluated and designed for long-term stability, in addition to the conventional design focus on efficiency. In this work, a study protocol framework is presented for the rapid screening of unencapsulated devices against UVID. Unencapsulated passivated emitter rear contact (PERC) and tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) devices were aged under different UV irradiance intensities and measured via conventional nondestructive electrical characterization methods to assess performance degradation. Based on the results, protocol efficacy and recommendations for further study are discussed. As a result, this work is part of a broader effort to develop rapid screening processes that cut across architectures and exposure conditions to aid module manufacturers in vetting new materials choices for long-term stability.

UNIFI Specifications for Grid-Forming Inverter-Based Resources: Version 3

The UNiversal Interoperability for grid-Forming Inverters (UNIFI) Consortium addresses fundamental challenges facing the integration of grid-forming (GFM) inverters in electric grids alongside rotating machines and other inverter-based resources (IBRs). This document defines a set of UNIFI specifications for GFM IBRs that provides requirements from both a power system level as well as functional requirements at the inverter level that are intended to provide means for the vendor-agnostic operation of GFM IBRs at any scale in electric power systems.

Development of Post-Consumer Textile Waste Degradation Protocol and Related Downstream Transformations: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Tereform, Inc. (Tereform) is developing molecular deconstruction processes to transform waste materials into chemical building blocks. During the CRADA, Tereform deconstructed real-world post-consumer substrates into chemical monomers, validated their performance on laboratory scales, demonstrated feasibility of the degradation products in downstream transformations, and successfully scaled the reaction to kilogram-scale. These results were used to develop and refine technoeconomic analysis and lifecycle assessments to evaluate the economic feasibility and environmental impacts of the process.

Commercialization of the NLR Hydrogen Wide Area Monitor (HyWAM): Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

Hydrogen wide area monitoring refers to the temporal and quantitative 3-dimenasional spatial profiling of hydrogen plumes following either intentional or unintentional hydrogen releases. A hydrogen wide area monitor (HyWAM) would have applications as a research tool, for example to provide empirical data on the behavior of hydrogen dispersions following a release, which in turn can be used to validate modelling studies. Support of modeling studies and commercial applications are interrelated, since modeling can serve to guide HyWAM deployment for enhanced safety within medium to large scale hydrogen operations, such as those envisioned by H2@Scale.

Development of Novel Combustion Codes for Supercritical CO2 Combustion: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-20-17182

The Allam-Fetvedt Cycle, a novel supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycle developed by 8 Rivers Capital, LLC, generates low-cost power from fossil fuels while capturing combustion-CO2. This cycle employs high-temperature oxy-combustion using sCO2 as the working fluid, leading to a challenging environment for materials. The most critical component for reliable deployment of this technology is the combustor-turbine interface. In the proposed partnership between NREL and 8 Rivers, we will develop a simulation-based tool to provide key design inputs for defining the materials and geometries required in this critical area.
