A First-Principles Study of the Structural and Thermo-Mechanical Properties of Tungsten-Based Plasma-Facing Materials

Tungsten (W) and tungsten alloys are being considered as leading candidates for structural and functional materials in future fusion energy devices. The most attractive properties of tungsten for the design of magnetic and inertial fusion energy reactors are its high melting point, high thermal conductivity, low sputtering yield, and low long-term disposal radioactive footprint. Despite these relevant features, there is a lack of understanding of how the structural and mechanical properties of W-based alloys are affected by the temperature in fusion power plants. In this work, we present a study on the thermo-mechanical properties of five W-based plasma-facing materials. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations are combined with the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) theory to investigate the electronic, structural, mechanical, and thermal properties of these W-based alloys as a function of temperature. The coefficient of thermal expansion, temperature-dependent elastic constants, and several elastic parameters, including bulk and Young’s modulus, are calculated. Our work advances the understanding of the structural and thermo-mechanical behavior of W-based materials, thus providing insights into the design and selection of candidate plasma-facing materials in fusion energy devices.

Prime Time for Model-Predictive Control? Assessing the Technical and Market Readiness of Advanced Controls in Buildings

Despite three decades of extensive research and field testing that have consistently validated the benefits of Model Predictive Control (MPC) in building applications, the technology has seen limited market adoption. This paper evaluates the readiness of MPC for widespread deployment, showcases recent demonstrations and field tests across diverse building types, including residential, small commercial, large commercial, and campus settings. Our results demonstrate that MPC can optimize system operations to achieve load shifting, minimize curtailment of on-site generation, and reduce energy costs by up to 80 %, while maintaining or improving occupant comfort. We also show that MPC can effectively control large assets, such as MW-sized thermal storage systems, and respond to dynamic pricing signals. However, achieving scale remains difficult due to labor-intensive workflows, reliance on a “PhD-in-the-loop” for MPC design and maintenance, susceptibility to fragile data infrastructure, and persistent workforce education and acceptance barriers. To bridge this gap, we outline a transition from bespoke, labor intensive prototypes toward streamlined, segment-targeted deployment strategies that leverage model templates, semantic tools, and generative AI. By automating control configuration and reducing engineering effort, these recommendations provide a pathway for transforming successful research demonstrations into scalable, market ready solutions for MPC-based controls.

Community Resilience Through Rapid Restoration Leveraging Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Low-Cost Sensors

Equitable and automated bottoms-up power restoration following an extreme event will be demonstrated at a site in Puerto Rico. To do so, the team will develop enhanced grid situational awareness techniques integrating behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DER) discovery, impedance sweeping based outage boundary detection, and feasible restoration path identification algorithms. Resilience metric will be developed and incorporated along with situational awareness information in a distributed Model Predictive Control (MPC)-based restoration optimization algorithm to control and mobilize grid assets. These algorithms will be validated through power hardware-in-the-loop experiments and ultimately, a site demonstration to show that outage recovery time and total recovered load could be improved by >20% over the baseline.

Advanced Model Development for Large Eddy Simulation of Oxy-Combustion and Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Power Cycles

A joint experimental and numerical study is performed to observe the characteristics of a supercritical carbon dioxide turbulent mixing layer in the presence of strong nonlinearities in the thermodynamic and transport properties. A bespoke experimental setup is designed and employed for this purpose and provides insight into macroscopic mixing behavior. The mixing is experimentally observed using two techniques: shadowgraphy and spontaneous Raman scattering. Qualitative and quantitative intensity fields obtained via these techniques yield instantaneous and mean density data. Spanwise temperature data is also collected using analogue resistance temperature detectors. These measurements are used to quantify the level of mixed material within the field. The experimental data are supplemented by a companion high-fidelity numerical study. The numerical results are obtained through fully resolved, three-dimensional direct numerical simulation. The numerical dataset permits observation of the near-field mixing characteristics, which are difficult to measure experimentally due to the rapid dynamics and sharp thermophysical gradients in this area. Qualitative field visualizations are presented, followed by quantitative mixed material results and observations regarding thermodynamic property trends at select locations within the field. One-dimensional spectra of the turbulent kinetic energy and solenoidal dissipation are provided to observe the spectral characteristics of the flow. Reynolds stress anisotropy is analyzed graphically through anisotropy invariance maps (Lumley triangles). The mixing quantification, spectral data and anisotropy analysis of a flow at these thermodynamic conditions represent the main outcomes of the work.

Efficient Leaching of Metal Ions from Spent Li-Ion Battery Combined Electrode Coatings Using Hydroxy Acid Mixtures and Regeneration of Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide

Extensive use of Li-ion batteries in electric vehicles, electronics, and other energy storage applications has resulted in a need to recycle valuable metals Li, Mn, Ni, and Co in these devices. In this work, an aqueous mixture of glycolic and lactic acid is shown as an excellent leaching agent to recover these critical metals from spent Li-ion laptop batteries combined with cathode and anode coatings without adding hydrogen peroxide or other reducing agents. An aqueous acid mixture of 0.15 M in glycolic and 0.35 M in lactic acid showed the highest leaching efficiencies of 100, 100, 100, and 89% for Li, Ni, Mn, and Co, respectively, in an experiment at 120 °C for 6 h. Subsequently, the chelate solution was evaporated to give a mixed metal-hydroxy acid chelate gel. Pyrolysis of the dried chelate gel at 800 °C for 15 h could be used to burn off hydroxy acids, regenerating lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide, and the novel method presented to avoid the precipitation of metals as hydroxide or carbonates. The Li, Ni, Mn, and Co ratio of regenerated lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide is comparable to this metal ratio in pyrolyzed electrode coating and showed similar powder X-ray diffractograms, suggesting the suitability of α-hydroxy carboxylic acid mixtures as leaching agents and ligands in regeneration of mixed metal oxide via pyrolysis of the dried chelate gel.

Novel PtNi single-atom–nanocluster (SA–NC) ensembles promote Tafel kinetics and ampere-class AEM hydrogen evolution

The development of efficient, durable, and low-PGM electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is critical for next-generation electrolysis technologies. We report a facile two-step synthesis of highly dispersed PtNi and PtNi-nitride nanoclusters (NCs) (~2.3 nm) with ultralow Pt content (0.5 at.%) anchored on N-doped Vulcan carbon. Structural and compositional characterization via XAS, XPS, HAADF-STEM, HRTEM, and EDS mapping established key structure–activity relationships across varying Pt/Ni ratios and pyrolysis temperatures. The Pt0.5Ni0.5/C-750 catalyst, an ensemble of PtNi M-N-C type single-atom (SA) moieties with neighboring PtNi nanoclusters (NC), exhibited superior HER performance in alkaline media, achieving overpotentials of 30, 115, and 210 mV at 10, 100, and 500 mA cm−2, respectively. Despite at a lower Pt content, this novel SA–NC ensemble outperformed commercial Pt/C by ~36%. A standardized literature comparison with contemporary Pt- and Ru-doped analogues reveals the as-prepared Pt0.5Ni0.5/C-750 to sit at the apex of Tafel-limited kinetics and low overpotential at 100 mA cm−2. Tafel-limited Tafel slopes in both alkaline and acidic regimes confirm favorable proton recombination kinetics. Mass activities at 200 mV reached 13.8 and 18.84 A mgPt−1 in alkaline and acidic media, respectively. However, excessive nitridation (e.g., at 650 °C) adversely altered Pt electronic structure and HER kinetics. While Ni enhanced alkaline HER, acidic HER favored Ni-free analogues. Pt0.5Ni0.5/C-750 also demonstrated robust temperature responsiveness and 300-h operational stability at high current densities (0.5–1.0 A cm−2) in MEA tests. This work presents a scalable strategy for designing thermally responsive, durable, and compositionally tunable NC catalysts with neighboring SA moieties for alkaline electrolysis.

Single-crystal NMC622 from combustion-assisted solid-state synthesis: Tunable particle size, voltage-dependent stability, and Li-ion diffusion

Cost-effective and scalable synthesis of single-crystal lithium–metal-oxide cathodes with controlled size and morphology remains challenging for advancing high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Here, we demonstrate a solution combustion–assisted solid-state method for producing single-crystal NMC622 with tunable particle size at various lithium stoichiometries. Structural and electronic characteristics were probed using synchrotron-XANES, EXAFS, XRD and XPS, confirming well-defined coordination environments and phase purity up to Li ≈ 1.3. The electrochemical behavior of LixNMC (x = 1.0 and 1.3) single crystals was evaluated across 2.8–4.3 V and 2.8–4.7 V windows to elucidate the effects of lithium content and operating voltage. At 2.8–4.3V, Li1.3NMC exhibits higher initial capacity due to its larger lithium inventory, while Li1.0NMC shows superior long-term retention driven by its larger crystal size and reduced structural distortion. Increasing the cutoff voltage to 4.7 V enhances the initial capacity of both compositions by 17–25%, but long-term capacity retention ultimately converges to values comparable to those at 4.3 V due to voltage-induced degradation, where Li+ diffusion constant remains lying ranging from 10−12 –10−11 cm2s−1. Overall, this study establishes a scalable combustion-assisted route for synthesizing tunable single-crystal NMC622 and highlights the interplay between lithium stoichiometry, particle size, and voltage window in governing cathode stability.

Enzymatic Nylon Deconstruction: Enzyme Discovery, Engineering, and Opportunities

Nylons are widely used synthetic polyamides valued for their strength, versatility, and durability across diverse applications. However, their petrochemical origin and energy-intensive production underscore the need for efficient, circular solutions. Conventional recycling methods remain limited by incomplete recovery, material degradation, and costly sorting requirements. Enzymatic depolymerization offers a selective, low-energy alternative capable of processing mixed waste streams under mild conditions. While significant progress has been achieved for polyesters, enzymatic degradation of polyamides is still at an early stage. The discovery of nylon hydrolases demonstrated the potential of biological systems to evolve catalysts for synthetic polyamides, yet reported depolymerization yields remain low. These limitations reflect both the structural complexity of nylons and the need for improved enzyme discovery and engineering. In conclusion, this review highlights recent advances, key challenges, and future directions for enzymatic nylon recycling, outlining its potential role enabling mixed polymer waste to be used as a green feedstock for remanufacturing.
